Yesterday I forgot to safely remove my drive from my clothes before it went into the washing machine...

Will wait till Sunday before I plug it back in. I really hope it still works. :(

I washed my Transcend 4GB once, got my jeans back looked in the pocket and found my drive, it still works perfectly though :D

Ok, for an on topic response. First plug in the USB drive, then, on XP, if you go to device manager and expand "disk drives".

You will see the USB stick listed. Right click on the USB drive and select "Properties". That will open a dialog. The second tab is one called "Policies". On that tab you have two options:

1) Optimize for quick removal
2) Optimize for performance

If you have "Optimize for performance" selected then you will have to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" option otherwise, it's fine just to remove the USB stick.

I like using both. 1) for when I know I have plenty of time and in a safe place. Also if they have a lot of xp.
2) for when my drive is in someone else's pc. You never know when the owner is going to return. Quick removal can be life saving.

Anyways, tis not necessary to Safely Remove a PORTABLE HDD, whether it be 2.5" or 3.5" coz Windows is writing to live storage with life cache etc.

Not so, Windows caches "Writes" to drives so if your drive is setup as "Optimize for Performance" then you could find yourself in a tough spot. Some of the data will be written and other data will not. This could result in lost files or even a corrupt file allocation table.

I optimized my Flash for performance. Now it does not want to work in Vista, but works fine in XP and on 2003 server. What gives?

Safely Remove ever since I lost my data. :(

Now I pretty much freak out if I see someone else not doing it.

Leave it in rice so that the moisture can be fully taken in

Found mine outside on a window sill at mymother-in-law's house a year after i lost it. the cover was bleached, twisty and broken, and the insides all rusty, but it still worked. I love solid state :)

No! Literally!

But it is advisable to Safely Remove a USB FLASH Stick, coz it is solid state media with no cache. Remember that Windows is RAWB system. RAWB? Old school NT days people...
