I dont think ive ever removed a drive safely, thats including my portable laptop hdd.
So far ive had no issues, unless you pull it out while still writing to it, a drive scan is needed after that to clean up the issues.
You shouldn't use your back Ports for a USB-drive pooky. Keep it clean man!

its a 2.5" harddrive
in an external casing
I cannot safely remove even if i wanted to, OS wont allow me at all.

You need to finnish the transfer, and ask if you may safely remove
