Do you still use a telephone book?

Yes I do use it every now and then. But most of the time I use the paper as newspaper to wrap things up Lol...dual purpose. Just hope I don't use the pages that contain numbers that I need..

No - I remember last using one when in University (2010) and not knowing what the IT departments number was. My internet was down, so I couldn't google it. Can't even say the last time I even saw one since then.

Last year they delivered a phone book, it got chucked on the shelf. A while later my daughter (17) asked for a number, told her to look in the phone book, and that was funny, I then realised that at 17 she had NEVER opened one, did not have a clue what it is about. Just shows you, all this old tech will be gone soon.

Yes might be on the way out. BUT, your daughter is worse off for not having had to go and look up things in an index etc. Using a phone book as a kid taught many of us lots of really basic skills about all sorts of things ... Now, the computer does it all for us. We are becoming less able to think for ourselves without these gadgets we find so essential to survival these days.

A phone book is a printed data base, It shows in paper form all the principals of what makes up a good database. It is a very powerful skill development tool. It only works IF it has been done properly. You can't go back and fine tune the "search tools" after it is printed. It has to be right from the get go. It teaches discipline, attention to detail, and forces the compilers to be absolutely sure of what the outcome is supposed to be before the book is printed. So yes we will probably see the demise of the printed version, but we will all worse off as a result. Even if many don't know they will be worse off!

It explains why us old timers cannot relate to the younger generation either when it comes to finding information sometimes. We take for granted that everyone has acquired the basic skills we have and in many cases that is not true.

Yes, I often need the directory - almost daily, especially the yellow pages.
