I like the idea of socialised medicine. So in principle something in the vein of the NHI is something I would support.

In a country like South Africa, with an economy floundering, unemployment on the rise, so few citizens contributing significantly to taxes, and a generally irresponsible citizenry that will loot and destroy anything public, the NHI is doomed from the start.

Fix the absolute fundamentals in the country first, get it progressing economically so that there are ample funds available, then you can consider stuff like this.

But you had working healthcare which you still have, nothing is preventing you to go to government hospital.
Issue is that service declined so much that there was need for private solution.
I'm not happy to pay for it but knowing system it is only option and I also know that no matter how much money you throw at it government healthcare outside of WC will not work.
