Surprisingly a lot more socialists on the forum than I thought.

Poor people enablist @epah
You can run social healthcare without being a socialist country.

You can support a social healthcare scheme without being a full on socialist.

I support the idea of an NHI.

The practicality is just a pipe dream. It does not fit in with capitalism and it must die.

Its simply not whether you "support" it, or "don't support" it. That's not even a question.

I support everyone having Lamborghini's in their driveways. Lamborghini's for all, let the people be happy. But why is that not viable? Simple economics. You cannot purport to live in a capitalist system, and not understand the concept of capital. There is not enough money for everyone to have Lamborghinis. You can legislate that those who have more, must pay towards the Lamborghini's of those who have less. Fine, legislate it. But it doesn't DO anything productively or sustainably. It does two things:

First, it simply makes those who have more, leave the place that asks them to pay more. Because that is not fair, no matter how much you tell them "is fair" and that they are evil for not wanting to give away their capital freely. And as they leave, the less viable it becomes. (Not even to mention that SA already has one of the most progressive income tax systems in the world. Nope, not even mentioning that)

Secondly, it ignores the fact that the math doesn't add up. The system would require so much funding, that it would collapse the other legs of the system. The NHI cannot work. There are not enough employed people to pay for the unemployed people. It's basic math.

This doesn't even touch on the fact that it will be the most corrupt system in the countries existence, that will have the biggest impact on the lives of the citizens. It doesn't even touch on the fact that it is the equivalent of asking toddlers to build a functional rocket engine. You'll end up with some crayon drawings, fishtank-spacehelmets and lots of "psheeeewwww eeeeeeennnyowwww" noises simulating the rocket take-off, but zero functional implementation. And spilled red cooldrink and sticky floors everywhere, toddlers passed in every corner of the room taking a nap from the sugar crash. Crisp can suck as much government d!@k as he wants, and repeat the fact that it will be glorious, over and over, but it doesn't make any of his rantings even remotely coherent. Need proof? Hey, Nicholis, what happened to all the other functions that government "runs"?

Fun times ahead.

Yes: We have never had Medical Aid before, healthcare should be free for everyone. It is our human right to have it
You have free healthcare. You can walk into any government hospital, and get free healthcare. Do you not understand this?

I’m sure your attitude was just fine when your white skin did wonders for you, right?
Listen you dipschit. My white skin never did fokol for me. You and your crowd still pissingyour pants over apartheid is what gives me a bad attitude.

It is totally impossible to implement NHI as a functional system. Morally it is fantastic. Politically it is a stagnant swamp. Just glance back at what the public sector did/was 2 decades ago and what it is now. That is what is going to happen to NHI. Too much gravy and cadres get itchy fingies. RSA is the new dawn of a constant state of collapse. Eskom; Transnet; SAA; SABC; why will NHI be different?

It did nothing for you? yet you can point out it worsens things for you. Seems you still not over Apartheid, not me. The good ol-days?

You can go to a clinic and a public hospital right now and free healthcare.

World class Healthcare thanks to the ANC and the DA (Western Cape).

Nope, I dont mind supporting my daughter and wife.

But I have adult siblings who think that working is not necessary and that you have to subsidise their living costs. That is all waht socialism is, expecting others to fund your lifestyle.

Yes I do support the NHI. If it works correctly then great, the medical aids are total %#$%^#^#$. I pay based on how much I earn on a sliding scale with my medical aid, and its 2.8x more for my family for the EXACT same benefits as someone who earns less. So I want to see my medical aid BURN.

But yes if properly administered the NHI can work. I have seen it abroad in a few country where there are levels of the NHI and your contribution. ie R80 per month for 3rd class and R350pm for 1st class private care. (ie a room of 2 max) and so on. I have used our local clinic before and in honestly it wasnt bad. They got my child cured from a skin condition that R15k in private care costs couldnt solve. I know they also have better bite and burn centres with more experienced doctors.

Some private doctors also work in government hospitals. Our Gynae (Breitling, Mac Pro and Porsche) frequently worked at government hospitals too for more experience etc.

The generic medicine was a good 1st step.

But there should be some changes.

1. You must legally be here in SA.
2. Everyone must pay equally monthly, in Asia its based on your family book. If not on the family book then nope.
3. They can deduct from the SASSA or SRD grant to cover the people's medical

And doctors can take a pay cut. Yip 4 holidays abroad for the entire family a year? I know our Paediatrician asks for follow up visits. R1000 for a main visit 10 mins max, and R750 for follow up 5 mins max.

But you had working healthcare which you still have, nothing is preventing you to go to government hospital.
Issue is that service declined so much that there was need for private solution.
I'm not happy to pay for it but knowing system it is only option and I also know that no matter how much money you throw at it government healthcare outside of WC will not work.
Currently do use the government hospital in Worcester, very clean and nothing is broken. Highly recommend anyone that needs a proper run government hospital to go there,

Out of interest. Long ago when we visited the dentist, the assistant will first clean your teeth, take pictures that needs to be taken, etc. Then the dentist will come in and know what needs to be done.

Yet today that doesnt happen, and the dentist asks you what they should be do, before even checking your teeth. They would also drill without first cleaning properly.

Have they become lazy? But they ask more now.

The Western Cape Healthcare system is miles ahead of everyone else. Because everything works.
