I expect a massive boom in private healthcare in Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia. If you have anything more complicated than a mild rash you'll have to go there to get it sorted.

My brother went in for a spider bite to a government hospital, he got great care there.

He was on one of Discovery's senior plans. He was amazed he could see the doctor 3-4 times a day in the government hospital. You're lucky to see your doctor maybe once every 2-3 days in a private hospital.

Yip it worked. Queue was bit longer but was helped and even medicine was free.

Compared to Clicks who tried to bill my medical aid R15k of medicine that costs R150. My Medical aid called me while there and gave them a speech.

What will be the incentive for doctors to take a pay cut? Will you take a pay cut because the government says you earn to much? I don't think so, you will leave this country as quickly as you can get a flight out. And with you leaving, you take away the jobs you created and the taxes you paid,

I have only been to Worcester and to Groote Schuur, both hospitals are super clean, comfortable beds, clean linen and yes the Doctor and nurses attend to you every few hours. Amazing service.

Like everything else it all depends who is managing it, you have some clinics/hospitals that are really good (like private) and some that are not so good but none on the level of EC or NW.

When MO's come to wife's government clinic after internship (community service) in other provinces they think it is private because it is well stocked, clean and organized.
Doctors are dedicated and hard working, there is no nonsense (except occasionally with sisters) and it works quite well.
Unfortunately WC budget is cut by 1.6 billion (or around there) for this year and it feels but they still try to provide best, dignified care.
Main issue is increase in number of patients with budget that is not growing but it is cut.
Jan and Feb are well known for influx of patients from other provinces which also puts strain (not to mention violence).

Fiscal control is tight and there is not food, drinks during meetings, every Rand counts.

In my mind (also in medical field) there is no need for NHI but what we need is proper management of resources that we have in government sector, there is no reason for EC health to be so much worse than WC with similar budget.

Yip pretty much. To become a specialist takes years of sacrifice and hard work. When you have people who don’t even have matric telling you to take a pay cut and just work for how much they say… well good luck keeping them here. Also, it’s not just the direct jobs and tax money - these doctors spend a fortune in the economy which helps create further jobs. And the ripple effect is other tax payers are not going to stick around in a country which doesn’t have electricity, water, security and medical cover. This NHI is not even the final nail in the coffin, it is literally the entire graveyard. If this is implemented not even the private sector can save this country, like they are trying to do with power and rail.

You haven't really addressed my point. You can have something like socialised medicine without funding someone's entire lifestyle.

Having socialised medicine and making it possible to survive or live comfortably without working are not mutually exclusive, but they aren't the same thing either. One I support, the other I don't.

I had to say other. Can't really choose maybe anymore now, but I would have supported it if they went about it realistically. As it stands it looks more like a plan to destroy healthcare in SA along with a good chuck of the economy.

Under the ANC government, public hospitals has seen amongst the highest avoidable deaths in the world. The department of health is so embarrassed by it that it doesn’t publish the statistics - but some provinces do and, for example, Gauteng experienced 7143 Serious Adverse Events in the 2022/2023 financial year. Almost 2000 of these events resulted in death. All of them avoidable. The negligence in the public health sector is staggering.

The fat cats sitting on parliament also enjoy the very best Medical Aid benefits in the country under their own private medical scheme called PARMED. The taxpayer subsidies almost 67% of that medical aid directly, and the benefits are roughly double that of the most expensive plan in Discovery Health. Given that that particular medical scheme is enacted through an Act of Law, it is probably very likely that it will escape unscathed whereas the other medical aids will be phased out in accordance with section 33 of the NHI.

Corruption in the public health sector is extremely well documented. Even the previous minister of health was sacked because of his corrupt covid 19 shenanigans. The NHI gives the minister incredible sweeping powers.

South Africa’s private health sector is amongst the best in the world. Our doctors and nurses from the private sector are extremely sought after and are frequently head hunted by overseas medical firms and hospitals.

The government’s track record in the public health sector speaks for itself. The NHI will simply put destroy all of that. And you and I will pay handsomely for the front row seats to this medical apocalypse. And we won’t even get popcorn for the pleasure.
