I’d say yes..

With lesser traffic on the road, there is a lesser chance of drunk drivers taking a chance.

2ndly it’s a known fact that risk of vehicular accident accident exists between 10pm and 4am.. this reduces the hospital traffic in theory too especially in the later hours.

The usual complaint persons are the type that complain to complain. Infringement of rights.. I’m sorry but just a year ago the same whiners complained that gov was doing nothing vs crime in general. Whiners gonna whine.

Well it reduces crime for one, and it has been well documented that crime has dropped during the lock down period. However, as more people lose their jobs due to the anc miserable failure to govern like a proper civilized government, and instead choose to enrich themselves without any consequences, those people will turn to crime and it will be done because our courts are flooded with bullshit cases and if you just flash a anc membership card, they activate your "get out of jail" card for you.
The hard lockdown reduced crime initially, we saw that in the local stats. As they eased the lockdown crime skyrocketed, not as a result of the ease but due to the high poverty level as you said.

So the curfew seems to have no effect on crime. It obviously was supposed to though but they are not able to effectively able to do so.

I think the other thing behind it was that in conjunction with the alcohol ban it was supposed to reduce car accidents and load on the hospitals.

Doesn't make sense like a lot other stupid rules.
Curfew kicks in at 10pm. Restaurants are now allowed to stay open till 10pm.
So you are going to break the curfew rule on your way home anyway and most people doesn't care about
the curfew.

The only people likely to break the rule are restaurant staff. You go home before 22:00.

Nope.

in fact, I don't know of anybody who's ever been stopped by police in the middle of the night. And that includes the so called essential services employees

If we had proper law enforcement and disciplined people, yes it would have worked and served its purpose, for now, everyone is having an awesome time during a pandemic...

Why leave before ten if it is open till 10? Go home at 10pm if you like. Make curfew then from 11pm to 4pm?
How can curfew start at 10pm, but places are open till 10pm? Doesn't make sense. South Africans will always
stay until the very last minute.

In principle it reduces the amount of policing needed. Less violent crime. Fair to assume a knock on effect wrt to hospitalizations... You know, any of the stuff a rational individual might glean from 10 seconds of rational thought.

However, if you are whiny little bitch and the backbone of your worldview is Qanon then one can expect all manner of offal to spill from your mouth, or into the pages of a forum, as the case may be.

I cannot see any reason for the curfew, at all.

Occupying powers use curfews to control their subjugated populations, to prevent them from moving about and meeting with each other etc (ie to divide and conquer - that sort of thing), or when you expect crime and violence to break out at levels that cannot be controlled by the existing forces (eg in situations like Portland where you have violent riots every night) - those sort of situations, none of which seem to apply here (maybe you can make some sort of argument about our out-of-control crime rate - but then are you willing to say we should have a curfew every night?).

Seems to be nothing but a massive over-reach from the government, that is just abusing the power it awarded itself IMO.

I don't see how this has anything to do with the virus - in any event?
It shows us what a police state we have become

What a silly response. You call people whiners because they complain about crime, and then have the audacity to complain about their rights being taken away?

Curfew is only useful if you can police it.
We need police to police the police! It's about time the SAPS did some real police work like farmers deaths but then again that would be to difficult because they would actually have to work!

It definitely serves a purpose, just not the purpose of protecting South Africans from anything.

The real purpose:

Lovely source of revenue for the police.

How is it a sorce of income though? It's not as if they get paid per arrest or get a bigger budget if they make more arrests. If that were true, Llandudno SAPS would be bankrupt.

It does serve a purpose as far as safety is concerned. At least we all should be able to sleep safely between 22:00 and 04:00, if the police keep patrolling the streets, of course. I would have preferred a 23:00 to 04:00 curfew, but that was too much to hope for. Anyway, if the curfew is enforced then only criminals will be in the streets for the police to arrest

I used to run a bar. And here's the thing. The guys who are reasonable, responsible persons leave the restaurant / bar before 10 anyway. It's the alcoholics and the uselessly drunk drivers that stick around until midnight, 1am, 2am, 3am, until the poor bartender has to chuck them out or in most cases, drag them out by their feet. And one thing is a cash-in-the-till fact. You do not make that much money at a bar or restaurant after, say 12 midnight, anyway. Maybe 10% of your daily take.
Also, when you speak to the actual people who deal with it, the paramedics, the Trauma room nurses, the ER surgeons, they ALL agree with the curfew. It literally saves thousands of lives. I for one would not be opposed to a permanent "if not for work purposes" curfew after say, midnight. Anybody who is out at that time for any purpose other than work or an emergency is likely doing so completely unnecessy, needlessly exposing themselves to the rigors of driving tired and also exposing yourself to way more tired drivers and drunk drivers. Of course, there are exceptions to that, but be honest, how often do you have to go out after 11 for a non-emergency or non-work reason?
