I think when we ramp up the amount of tests into the public sector we will get a true picture of actually how many people are infected with the Covid-19 and I don't think its gonna read very well.

So I think we will have another extension and then maybe another one with less restrictions after that.
 
It is pretty likely that SA has an insane Coronavirus infection rate, and that we will realise as much before this extended lockdown ends. Which will almost certainly lead to super-extended lockdowns.

While I think we will have further lockdowns, it isn't an action I support, for the following reasons:
  • Total lockdowns are inherently ineffective. SA will not achieve herd immunity before a vaccine exists, the townships and taxis cannot adhere to social distancing and the virus can be reintroduced to the population at any point and start spreading rapidly again. It is not feasible to lockdown indefinitely while we basically wait for a vaccine.
  • As everyone likes to scream out like it's a novel (ahem) idea, what exactly are we saving if we let the economy crumble into dust? The economy needs to get going as soon as possible.
  • For the average South African, whatever the odds of dying due to Covid-19 are, the odds of dying due to starvation are much higher.
  • So just accept the reality of the situation. There can be no true lockdown, so don't chase that notion. Let people get back to work, let kids go back to school and emphasise/subsidise hygiene as much as possible.
 
the poor die from poverty vs the the rest die from covid-19
but ultimately the herd will be culled -- with so many older ppl dead care homes are emptying and burdens on the states will reduce...i.e pension payouts etc.

wouldnt want to be the leader of any nation to have to make this decision

It could create a new problem with social welfare and the collapse of our society's fabric. In desperately poor communities, grandparents are often raising grandchildren and providing the only source of income for the wider family. It's hard to imagine the suffering that would be caused by a hefty chunk of the elderly in SA being killed off.
 
Well it will probably extend, but I really hope not.

Other half was already informed today she's being retrenched. Big cut right there to our household income.

This lockdown is no good.

If the financial impact has not hit you yet, it probably will and is much more likely to cause trouble.
 
Zuma is scheduled to appear in court soon, the lockdown demon shall not pass.

A good sensible answer, but the panicked won't see it as that, they are convinced they go out they die.

Unfortunately, the opposite is likely.

When the numbers suddenly skyrocket as they probably will in the coming weeks, our politicians, who are not known exactly known for their calm and rational analysis at the best of times, are likely going to go into blind panic mode and triple down on everything. If that happens it could be a very dangerous time for the country.
 
Not going to happen. Anything more and Cyril and the NEC will be having talks in a rondavel.
