No, unless they do something that actually warrants tipping, like helping me with the trolley or loading groceries into the car.
This doesnt happen as much any more, normally they just hang out next to other cars and come running when you get to your car.

Not anymore.

I'm getting tired of these car guards. They have become arrogant and demanding.

If you tell them you don't have cash they reply and say they will go with you to the shop to buy them something and swipe your card.

Two days ago i went to a shop to get something and when I got back the one car guard was resting on my car. I asked him what the hell he was doing and his reply was " I'm watching your car, now you can see I'm doing my job"

I told him to get lost and he started getting aggressive and said that business is slow and I have to give him something. He had the audacity to tell me he doesn't want just R10 or so but at least R30 because he wants to buy bread and milk.

Told him to get lost and I left.

No. Ever since my my brother's car was stolen from a car park and the guard still asked us for something!

I try to - If I've got cash I do, if I don't, well, I don't.

When I have money on me. Unfortunately that is a rare thing.

Of course. Who else is going to keep the nation’s streets and parking lots free from the evil clutches of malcontents and ne'er-do-wells?

No. I like to think it is just because I don't carry cash, but I'd be lying.
My absolute favourite value added service they provide is to try and help me get out of a parking spot when there are no other cars approaching. Or hover right behind me while I help my kid with his seatbelt.

I love it when my PDC goes batshit because someone is trying to help me out of a parking

At Muizenberg beach yes, nowhere else. Most of the "car guards" you see in the street only materialise when you are ready to leave

One such gent yesterday (I think he was somewhat babbelas) stood right at the back of the car, so I could not see oncoming traffic. After a few seconds of asking him to move, I made the car jump backwards and he fell over. I could see the street much better then

Does anyone know anything about the car service shops which manage to deploy seemingly 100s of people in fancy dress on the junctions of Sandton and Bryanston to hand out flyers?

What are they paid and on what basis? Have the owners considered training these people to do meaningful work?

NO ... how about F-NO!!!

I don't loiter when heading back to the car, jump in, engine on, gear engaged and bye

polite wave at the "car guard" if he managed to run over in time to see me drive off

only times I'd willingly tip one is something like:

- out late at night in a dodgy part of town, the "car guards" are basically gangsters who will damage your car if you don't tip ... its extortion, but cheaper than an insurance claim

- on a Saturday morning if you want to go to the biscuit mill market in woodstock ... some "car guards" claim entire parcels of land / empty plots with traffic cones and what not, then charge you a parking fee, which you'll pay if there's no other parking of course
