This weekend I was blown away with Truphone. For those of you that do not know what Trubphone is, it is a SIP VoIP platform - and it really works.

Currently you can get truphone on Symbian smartphones as well as on the Apple iPhone. It works with WiFi or 3G and the quality is amazing. My wife is in Japan for a week and they have free WiFi pretty much everywhere, there is no lag when we call each other the the calls are completely free (well I pay 9c per MB on Amobia).

South Africa falls into the outer Tru-zone so when you call a landline you pay $0.1 pm and cellular is $0.5pm. If you have a Nokia phone you can now also SMS with Truphone. You can topup on their website and even setup an auto-topup threshold.

On Symbian phones Truphone integrates itself into the OS using the Internet Telephone API so it is always there, unlike Fring that you have to open and then switch to the background.

From the experience I have so far with Truphone and WiFi on your phone I guess pretty soon GSM roaming will be a thing of the past. My wife left her Cell C SIM in the car before she got out at the airport :p

Anyone else using this miracle of mobile communication ?

Isn't this the same as Skype?

No, this is a real VoIP platform. The quality from Truphone is a lot better than Skype. If your phone has support for Internet Telephony then would really recommend Truphone.

Ok cool, I do find Skype's quality average on calls to say the least....What constitutes a Internet Telephony compatible phone?

I find Fring works exceptionally well. Talk to my boet in London every couple of days and there is almost no lag on Wifi or 3G. And its completely free :D

Fring is good, but it does not integrate into the phone the way truphone does. You do not have to run truphone, it is already there. You can go onto any contact in your phone book and when you select them and get the options to Voice Call or Video Call you get the added option of Internet Call.

thats pretty sick. what will the costs of that be on vodacom with 3g? Like per minute?
