Do you use Truecaller, or similar, to identify who is calling?

No, never have and never will. ALL unidentified numbers are simply ignored and then if they persist, blocked by me. I don't need some or other dubious piece of rubbish software to think for me. If the number is not in my address book it is obviously someone I don't deal with and therefore safe to ignore.

These days I just talk to spammers when they call me. Sometimes we share a laugh, sometimes they get annoyed and hang up on me. But either way, it leaves me in a better mood.

I don't have a solution for robo-calls though.

I just block, any annoying call number.

I do not pay for a phone so that other assholes have a means to abuse me and my time.

I have a long, long block list.

Used Truecaller before POPIA was even a thing to vet individuals when I was working as an estate agent. Also helped a lot when I had to sell a lot of audio equipment. It was an immediate red flag when someone's name didn't match up with what came up on Truecaller.

Now it's mostly used to block competing banks and insurance calls.

Strange how it is criminals like Nigerian scammers who is the first to complain about Truecaller and wants laws to prevent people get to know they are scammers.

Because truecaller works by pulling contacts from its users. Although I think it would take more than one match to actually register a name in their db

Telemarkerters must then stop obtaining our numbers without our permission to contact us for sales. With Truecalle you can see when it is a spam call, telemarketer etc.

Truecaller assist with a number and name of a person who was harassing me. The case is still in progress.

So, Truecaller is a good app. Just leave it as it is.

I use Truecaller via the web using a burner Gmail account. That way I can look up numbers without giving up my contacts list.

Telemarketers can use Truecaller to obtain your name without your permission.

And then Truecaller users can use Truecaller to block the telemarketers

And the Lazarus group or other malicious actors can use Truecaller to target individuals... Even those who haven't consented to share their details

Let's not kid each other here. Telemarketers in SA don't need Truecaller to get your number, there are multiple other (probably easier) ways for them to obtain it. And the DMA do not contact list is a sham.

I don't have Truecaller, but the baked in Samsung equivalent is an absolute delight. Rage all you want, we're not going to stop using it as long as telemarketers are around.

Does Samsung harvest your photos, location, social media details for marketing / sharing with other companies?

I must admit, I still get a few stray calls but the Google blocking option works pretty well.

Just how do you think Google knows it's a telemarketer calling you? And yes, Samsung uses my information to deliver customised ads etc.

Back when 8TA launched they offered a free outgoing minute for every three incoming minutes. I use to put the phone next to the tv when a telemarketer called and let them wear themselves out like a toddler throwing a tantrum in the mall. Some months I'd end up with 100 free minutes or more.
