Only a Solidstate Hard disk can read and write at those speeds, and then only on specific types of files. Currently no conventional external hdd's can transfer files at a sustained 256MB/sec, the USB3 interface will allow it, but not the actual HDD.

So at this point in time having a 2gbps internet connection is a joke.

Besides that there's also the fact that many people nowadays have several devices that connect to the internet in their homes. You could have a PC downloading/seeding the internet 24/7, playing online games, having other members of the family watching YouTube, skyping etc. all at the same time at blistering speeds.

yeah? where you come up with that current HDDs cant transfer... as far as i know SATA 3 is 6gbps (i know doesnt reach close to that speed but yeah still can be done with RAID setups)

your bottleneck comes from normal NICs (1gbps)

moral of story? get more than 2 PC's with 1gbps NIC and go crazy to saturate the line . well atleast try to

Also as other forumites have mentioned, you aren't limited to using the connection on a single device. So I'll run my laptop, desktop, tablet, phone and TV off it, with capacity to spare.

i dont know about you but i have 3 PC's in my house, 3 cellphones and a Ipad and i often saturate the network. sending files here and there. normally sending 30- over 300GB at a time over network to other PC or something then also streaming on ipad or on pc's so yes i actually do max it out often.

and thats only for 2 people living together. Yes we are more than average users but i am pretty sure your normal user does use over lets say 90% for about an hour or so. if you going to send stuff on network already will max it out. Yes i am a Network tech but I see dayly networks use up 1gbps easy. and thats running Interent + VOIP.

like I say, if i have 3 PC's + 3 cellphones (push notifications on and updates as well) + a Ipad then i would love atleast 1gbps. download what you want and i few min (if so long) it done. then rest of day just put rest off. honestly id the forget completely about running HDD's yes id run like 256GB SSD and then just stream everything i want to.

but in real world speeds like downloads off server = they apparently max out at 600mbps last time i heard...

but yet again everyone to there own.
