Only a Solidstate Hard disk can read and write at those speeds, and then only on specific types of files. Currently no conventional external hdd's can transfer files at a sustained 256MB/sec, the USB3 interface will allow it, but not the actual HDD.
So at this point in time having a 2gbps internet connection is a joke.

Besides that there's also the fact that many people nowadays have several devices that connect to the internet online. You could have a PC downloading/seeding the internet 24/7, playing online games, having other members of the family watching YouTube, skyping etc. all at the same time at blistering speeds.

yeah? where you come up with that current HDDs cant transfer... as far as i know SATA 3 is 6gbps (i know doesnt reach close to that speed but yeah still can be done with RAID setups)
your bottleneck comes from normal NICs (1gbps)
moral of story? get more than 2 PC's with 1gbps NIC and go crazy to saturate the line. well atleast try to

Before we get into the technicalities, 2 things :
- Why would you want to download the internet, when you have a 2gbps connection ?
- I'd like to see how much of their 2gbps they actually use on average.

I've been running a 4 disk RAID array in my desktop since about 2006, SSD since 2009...
Also as other forumites have mentioned, you aren't limited to using the connection on a single device. So I'll run my laptop, desktop, tablet, phone and TV off it, with capacity to spare.
Like you frequently max out your 1gbps LAN at home ?
