DoC’s telecoms cost benchmarking

The DoC said that the development of a Programme of Action to benchmark telecommunications costs in relation to comparable countries would ultimately utilize ‘the successful areas as a model for a universally successful South African system.

So we compare against comparable countries, but its a universal system??? So you can compare lemons and oranges after all!
 
Rofl they chose to compare against South Korea?!! I didn't think that it was possible kick yourself in the balls but the DoC has found a way :D

Anyway seeing that they've chosen South Korea, now we should pressure them into beating South Korea!
 
That R667 listed s the cost of a 4 mbps line in SA is that including the analogue line rental or not. it should be including as a lot of people dont want or need the analogue line piece of "equipment" yet they are forced to pay it.

I say all adsl prices must have the total costs involved listed. and by total i mean every single cost involved. does not the new credit law demand something like this???
 
Interesting to note that the two most expensive countries (India and South Africa) both have the lowest internet penetration rates.

Obviously just a coincidence :rolleyes:

Amen to that. They steal over a hundred bucks a month for the analogue line rental from me each month. The irony is that the actual voice part of my line has been broken for 6 months. As all I use the line for is ADSL I don't want them to try to "fix" the voice part of the line and knock me off the Internet for 6 months!
 
we all know SA so called "broadband" sucks egg, this will prove/do nothing, and nothing much will be done about it
 
Yes, i'm sure there are about 100 threads in this forum about surveys just like this one being done over the past couple of years, it's not exactly earth-shattering news. Unfortunately, i agree with Beri, procrastination to follow :(
 
Comparing SA with almost any other country cost-wise is pointless as it proves the same thing over and over again. The only silver lining on our broadband cloud is that we have up-to-4Mbps ADSL, which is a lot faster than many other countries, albeit that the bandwidth and 'ADSL line rental' prices are obviously what's pushing SA's prices to above most comparable countries. R65+ for 1GB? It's ludicrous, and to make things worse for the same amount of money we splash out on a 3GB account one could get an uncapped connection in many other countries with a fraction of the latency (no 400ms to Google, 70 would be high) and higher speeds.

It's capable of 3.6Mbps as they trim around 20% off the max speed (it's not TCP overheads - this is done for a reason), but to draw maximum benefit one needs to use a multi-threaded program like ReGet or GetRight etc. Even Speedbit Video Accelerator downloads YouTube clips in seconds on the 4Mbps lines. If you use NetMeter you'll see the whole thing light up for a few seconds then the download's done.

The 4Mbps offering is pretty much the only forward-looking thing Telkom has done in the recent past, the company's stagnation must have become unbearable. Hopefully sometime soon they'll smooth the ADSL offerings out to 1Mbps, 2Mbps and 4Mbps.
 
Putting South Korea in their 'basket' was a bit optimistic, wasn't it? South Korea has one of the most effective broadband strategies in the world, mostly because it is driven by political will, something our government has lacked, severely.

I was also surprised by the Dementia of Communistications' inclusion of South Korea, but I soon realised that Poison Ivy would issue one of her typical unclarifications, that replaces South Korea with North Korea.
