Hi folks

We have just returned from the DoC Meeting in Midrand. So far it looks very promising… The Deputy Minister has taken a hard line regarding telecoms cost and there is a definite focus on Internet connectivity and broadband in specific. We have audio and video recordings which will appear here soon. We will also try to get the presentation from the OECD. Here local loop unbundling was one of the focal points.

Thanks as well to Antowan for attending the proceedings and bringing along his ‘technology’ for recordings etc. Thanks as well to him for making his well equipped office available to us.

Regards,

RPM

You go, Roy! Thanx stax, RPM and Ant...

wow - this sounds fantastic - more evidence of the increasing clout of the forum

rpm/antowan/other attendees - would be most interested in more of your impressions esp. with regard to appreciation of the implications of taking a hard line on telecomms costs for existing licencees and the extent to which the DoC intends to do this despite the opposition that will occur

lots of questions but will wait for the recordings

Hi IC

Thanks for the kind words...Antowan is the guy to thank here! The 50% was indeed mentioned and the DoC was asked ro look into the matter. It was truly refreshing to see the openness.

Regards,

RPM

Just wondering if the 50% off for schools was mentioned at all? and what the DoC are doing about making it a reality

I'm sure we'll have to wait for another 5 years before we see the price of bandwidth & broadband go down  . ICASA are a bunch of Telkom #### riders. #### :p

Hi rpm,

Great to hear it went well! Some random questions:

1. Was this the colloquam (sp?) you mentioned in the other thread?

2. Which deputy minister - the national one or deputy telco minister

3. Who's Cara? Does she 'work' for myadsl. There's been some great articles by her :).

4. What does local loop unbundling mean again?

Thanks! I'm so busy lately I just skim the forums so I sometimes miss the important bits :o

Thanks antowan for putting it up - lovely to hear from outside sources how we're being raped by telkom.

Did I hear the speaker invite SA to join the OECD?

How about a podcast from the DoC?

To me, all the talk that has been going on about high telco prices is just that: talk.
And talk - even Colloquiom sized talk - is cheap.

Antowan and anyone else representing MyADSL at this event - you guys need to push for concrete action.
I'm talking about getting the DoC particularly to publically agree to action plans with timelines.
Then we can all see if they are really willing to deliver, or whether this is all just another pointless exercise (much like ICASA).

lewstherin, the DoC is like a chick, if you pressure her too much she's gonna shut down on you and then no one would be happy :D

Not all the talk is a waste of time. If no one raises awareness about these issues nothings going to get done about it. About a year ago not much was being said about Telkom's exploitive practices. Now every day there's a new article being published about it. The climate has changed and Telkoms free lunch is going to end soon...

Since I joined this forum in August 2003, changed name some time ago,
I have never felt so positive that something will be done soooon.

myadsl has played a significant role in publicising the serious telecomms problems
facing the country and of course exposing the Telkom monopoly as such.

rpm, your efforts, determination and support from your team is much appreciated.

It was an interesting clip stating that which everyone already knew. Who were the two gentleman sitting besides the presenter? They looked mighty interested <insert sarcasm>here</close sarcasm> .

Thanks to all guys and girls working towards this. Shame I would love if I could be part and parcel of such an event....:(

On stage were:

South Africa’s deputy minister of communications Roy Padayachie.

Taylor Reynolds, an economist in the communications policy division of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Dr Tracy Cohen, a councillor at the Independent Communications Authority of SA.

Mr Joe Mjwara – Deputy Director General of Dept. of Communications. MC.
