Doctors will close practices if NHI is implemented

South African doctors and specialists have announced that they would rather close their practices than work under the government's National Health Insurance.

But, isn't that what the Act demanded in the first place? Private hospitals will close down and all doctors and specialists will work under the NHI in state hospitals?

In all fairness, the private sector had the chance to change since the announcement of the NHI. Instead, the private medical aid sector almost doubled in pricing. This is an indication that they can't become cheaper or cater for everyone. This also indicated that they are trying to grab as much while it is still raining. So, only thing left is the NHI. Those who want to leave, let them go. They will run into the same thing in many countries.

There is fair compensation and then there is daylight robbery. Medical aids are as much to blame.

Heaven knows, NHI is most certainly not the answer in any form but medical costs globally are unaffordable.

My brother in the US had a big back op in January. Cost the equivalent of just over ZAR1m.

I had a prescription for chronic medication renewed telephonically just last month. I was charged R130 for this. I did take up some of his time, he had to look up my last blood tests results and wrote out a script. I collected the script after work on my way home. Old school doctor which has been my GP for more than 40 years.

Obviously there are exceptions. But they are few and very far between.
