Does a ban on booze help?

Does a ban on booze help free up valuable space and resources in the hospitals?

People should learn not to go to ER when drunk. Government should allow citizens to drink at home.

Yes I believe it helps but on the other hand we will have more homeless and people living in poverty due to loss of jobs in the alcohol production and transport line. This also then extends to our wine farms. Every working Sourh African will also be affected as our personal tax and company tax will need to go up to cover the loss in vat from the banning of alcohol sales.
Why dont they limit the hours I.e Monday to Thursday 10-16.00

They could also look at restaurants opening at the above hours which would provide a bit of relief to the hospitality group
 
It may save some casualty figures but the blanket ban is wrong. Peoples livelihoods are being taken away. More discipline is required and if people can't behave responsibly then the law should be there to ensure public order. The biggest problems are that the shebeens and drinking dens stock up before the announcements and hike the prices so the drinking doesn't stop. If they can't get it legally they get it illegally or start home brewing. The majority of people visiting restaurants behave responsibly so why endanger businesses for the sake of a few.
There are far more negative aspects to the ban than any gains.
 
Really? Must we blame and ban cars now as well, seeing as they also contribute?
Must we ban kissing, as this is the easiest way to get COVID?

Inept, corrupt government and half the population who think its a myth, will see us still in lockdown 2 years from now.
 
If people cant be responsible then such things will happen .Why not buy your booze and enjoy it at home ??
I understand that everyone's situation is different ,but the virus isnt a game and youre playing with your own life and the lives of others by not simply staying away and isolating......

I hope Oom Cyril lets us buy booze again after the 14 days has elapsed,but for consumption at home.

Prior to current level 4+ the government's preference was for you to drink in a tavern/pub/shabeen, especially over the weekend, and then navigate your way home.
 
32000 people unemployed in the beverage industry that helps??
Gathering in closed rooms and drinking that is a problem and must be banned.
But adhering to the separation and Covid rules should allow alcohol consumption or best have a drink at home!
 
Would like to see some stats of how many alcohol related injuries are hospitalised per week.let government back their with statistics.

And a massive obesity problem as well. People are not eating healthy. Time to close all restaurants and fast food franchises.
 
Our government seems to have extreme ability
To bring SA and all it people to its knees

What has trully happened with freedom in our country?
There is lots of ways this can be handled without effecting the rest of SA

First start by changing the drunk driving law so that it immediately has the same repercussions as attempted murder (not at the stupid 0% level it is now the previous one)

This will get lots of the "I only had a few too many drinks but I am ok" to stop drinking and driving

Then while covid is happening advise any Health care workers to place care of drunk injuries at bottom of priority list

So you have 10 patients but can handle only 8
But 3 of then injured themselves while drunk

So they can wait while all the others is helped
If they die it was due to their choice

But SA should stop taking everyones rights away because of the virus that could still be here in 10 years (or 30 going on how quick we are giving vaccines)

Yes, there is already a sugar tax as well as legislation against marketing to children plus talk of warning labels for junk food.

Obesity is not a problem you can fix in a short period of time. The alcohol ban has an immediate impact on hospital admissions.
 
I think a far bigger problem we have, which is highlighted by this alcohol issue, is the adulthood in this country.

The reason you can only drink or get a drivers license or vote when you are over 18 is because you are considered to be mature enough (adult) to understand the risks and consequences involved.

Yet is seems we have a vast majority that are not up to the task of being adults.

Another telltale sign of this adulthood problem is the majority vote in the country. That is a much bigger adulthood problem than alcohol to be honest.
 
Not really, As booze are still available in the illegal trade and people might get now more dangerous booze. In another case it fuels domestic violence. I wish the government will send their representative on a Friday/Saturday night to one of the government hospitals/clinics even now with the booze ban.

The already is a sin tax as well.

The hospitals that was built to handle the increase in hospitilisations stands unused. Even worse, one of the big hospitals was closed after a fire and never opened again.
