You just gave me flashbacks to the first time my dad left black stripes half a block long with me in the car, even though he doesn't drink I thought he was completely wasted and I was scared ****less, I didn't know he was capable of such things :D :D :D When I was a kid he always drove SUPER responsibly with me in the car. Shot for the trip down memory lane :p

You cant just about the car in front if you, there is a possibility he can come to an immediate dead stop, its unlikely but can still happen, that why the 3 seconds.

Not to mention the fact that you as a driver will take a short time to ascertain the extent of the deceleration of the vehicle ahead.

Yes it's stupid and it's just as stupid for the driver infront to test his ABS for no reason.

It's also not a given you will hit him.
You can tell an ******* driver on our roads. He is in the right and everyone is passing him in the left lanes. Just avoid and overtake.

Here's the thing... the general pop is not likely to effectively grasp any of the physics at work, not even at a basic level. An advanced driving instructor can however, hammer better driving behavior through the thick skulls of such individuals, thus reaching a wider potential audience.

Besides, do you really want the taxi drivers distracted trying to rethink how physics work regularly while on the road? They are dangerous enough when paying attention, nevermind deep in thought.

No, you said two seconds if fine at 120 which is just not correct, it is not fine, not thinking used and I'll explain later. And then you said many do it... well, just one of the many reasons for our horrid road safety record I guess, many people overtake dangerously into oncoming traffic, do you do that too because they do? I thought you thought for yourself? :p Why do you I have to sit in heavy congestion so much on the N1 in midrand so many days (excluding those caused by problems with broke down vehicles)? Its because of ****ers not keeping following distances then having bumper bashings involving 2 or 3 cars. That's why!

And about not following the herd, yeah, like those parents who don't want their kids to get vitamin K injections at birth and then the kids can get blood problems more easily, and then they moan "nobody told them".

And if YOU really thought for yourself and know a bit about physics, do you know how much you weigh if you maybe have an accident at, lets make it, 30km/h? And how much that can of coke in that shopping bag on the backseat weighs (make it 330g)?

If your braking distance not counting reaction time at 60km/h is 60m, what is it at 120km/h?

I had kind of a long-weekend - went to the Pink Loerie Festival in Knysna.

The roadtrip was my friend's idea because he had just recently bought a Golf 7 TDi. On the way there and back though, he constantly did the following, which really grated my carrot but I rather said nothing:
- driving too fast for the road conditions e.g. speeding through a section under construction where the speed limit was reduced from 120 to 60 and from two lanes to one.
- Tailgating at 120 - this was the scariest ****, plus, it started to rain when we got to Robertson, so the road was wet, but this continued.
- Overtaking when it's not safe to do so - literally, taking chances


He's never driven like this before, not even when we drove in convoy. Now, I'm just wondering whether it is that he's over-confident because of the new car, or whether he's testing it's limits, or whether he was just being a douche. Feel free to comment on the merits of his driving or on the car.

He sounds like he was just being a douche and an irresponsible one.

If he wanted to drive like a maniac, let him do so when he is ALONE - not with other potential VICTIMS !

An Advanced Driving Course will definitely assist ... in making you over confident. A Defensive Driving Course is a far better idea.
 
Do both. First advanced defensive, then when you've started effectively applying it in real life sign up for advanced high performance.
