Anybody using a Kindle here? A friend is bringing in the International version of the Kindle 3 shortly, and wonders how the downloading works here. Is it correct that's it's supposed to run via Vodacom, and that it's free of data charges? Can anyone confirm this actually works as intended here in SA? Tks!

It works - I have the Kindle 2 International and you can download books here. It is actually the only way I get books on the device.

I've also used it in Italy and have not yet received any data bill. :D

Remember, the data delivery costs are built into the book fees - the books are typically $2 more expensive in the "SA Store" than in the "US Store" - even though everything is purchased from www.amazon.com.

If you can fool the thing to believe you are on the US store, you can also access the webbrowser and surf for free in SA. Using the SA store, you can only access Wikipedia as far as I know.

Yes you can but go to a site like Warez BB download the book for free from a file host and if you have to convert the format using a program like Calibre.

How does this help him? He didn't want to know where he can pirate books.

I told him he could download from Amazon on the Kindle over here but also told him another way to get books onto his Kindle. If you're not happy with people giving advice that's upto you mate.

Yup works for sure I have been using a kindle 2 for a year remember $1.99 charge if you are on US store, if you are on SA store books will be $1.99 more expensive here more or less....

going to be getting my dad one for Christmas, which one should i go for the smaller or the bigger one? Will defiantly be getting the 3g version though.

I use kindle on the pc, not sure how it works, but 10 seconds after you purchase a book, you have a 1200 page book on your pc, no download wait time, nothing, its just there.
