+1 agreeWindows security essentials is a great free av software for home user.
Do you have any other symptoms, task manager greyed out, run command disabled? It would help if you could take a screen shot of the startup tab of msconfig, with the columns adjusted so it can all be read correctly, what is running and from where. You might have to do a few so you can get it all in. Like this for example:

Seems he was using AVG which is why McAfee is the virus. Not likely that he's running 2 different anti viruses on his pc therefore I assume the McAfee is a virus... In any event McAfee is a reasonably useless anti virus while Avira on the other hand is pedantic producing a lot of false positives, but rather be over protected than under protected IMHO... There's always the exceptions list to bypass the false positives..Thanks sandmanm34
i disabled it in msconfig>startup and restarted my PC.everything is running smoothly again.uninstalling AVG now so i can install Avira.
Good man...My work PC is in a regulated environment, we run McAfee on +- 25,000 machines. It was chosen for it's remote management, EPO. Not my first choice. I've got Avira on my home machine, much happier with that.
