When I bought a blackberry from Vodacom, I was under the impression that the blackberry service provided security support so that in the event my phone is lost or stolen, my numbers will be backed up.

Last night I was hijacked, and with it went my phone, laptop and gps. My phone was backed up on my laptop. However, speaking to the owner of the vodashop in wendywood when trying to buy a new blackberry, he said that no they do not provide the backup service.

What then is the point of the BIS service other than to provide slow data access? Is this not a misrepresentation of the blackberry service - since as far as im aware, it was one of the main selling fetures of the blackberry.

VodacomData, please provide me some help on this.

Seconly, last night after the hijacking I had Vodacom block my line and blacklist my fone. Today when trying to do a swim swap and reactivate my account, they tell me my account is in arrears. How can it be in arrears - im on debit order. My debit order goes off on the 1st of every month so obviously since the 1st was a weekend, it will only go off on monday. Because of this, they would not activate my account. Ive been with Vodacom for some 12 years now starting on prepaid and ending up with a contract (all on the same number) and I have never had a late payment or any problems in paying my bill - I find it quite unsatisfactory that they do not trust me enough to activate my account. Now I have to deal with more admin issues and visit them again.

AFAIK about the Debit Order thing, when your Debit Order falls on a weekend your account then gets debited on the last working day of that month(this is when choosing for the last day of the month for it to go off - not sure how it works with the 1st of the new month).

As for the Blackberry BIS Service, all this service includes is Unlimited Free Data Usage on your Blackberry and for your Blackberry to receive emails like SMS's. BIS is not a backup service.

Sorry to hear about your hijacking. :o

There is a backup facility included in the desktop manager software but afaik nothing OTA - at least if there is I've never been told about it.

EDIT - Google sync does backup contacts if you installed it.

I am with Iam3G. As far as I know, to back up your blackberry you would have needed to use the desktop software that came with your phone. When you get a new Blackberry you would then have restored all your info to the new handset using the desktop software.

Regarding the sim swop, I dont see why the system would have said that you are in arrears. This would only normally happen if the debit order got returned etc. They would have been able to see if this was the case on the notes made automatically by the system when a debit order got returned and advise you accordingly. If you PM me your number I can have a look for you and see what the story is.

So ocleroux assisting you here..

Unless your Blackberry is associated with a BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) which also does an OTA backup then with BIS only you will have to use the Desktop Manager software that comes with the handheld to backup & restore your data.
