Doing highschool math and science post-matric.

Greetings all,

I'm changing career paths and I need gr 12 math and science. I heard Damelin is a good place to get this done, unfortunately, they don't answer their phone line, neither does their head office (I'm not currently close to one to visit a campus). Has anyone here got any information with regards to doing this, how long it takes, what the fees will approximately be? I'll be doing it fulltime (attend lectures). I did maths literacy in high school, I'm not challenged in any way when it comes to academic subjects. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Could also take entry level courses at Unisa, Usually if you don't qualify for enrollment you can take extended modules.
 
Hey Andy,

I'm currently in the exact same boat as you - Wanting to change career paths 10 years after matriculating isn't an easy task (in my case), but I reckon doing it as soon as you're convinced it's the right path for you is the best way to go.

I am currently going through Master Maths, they're nationwide and have over 150 centers spread out from KZN, JHB to CPT. They offer Maths and Physical Science if you require re-doing both - in your case since you'd be able to do it full-time you could probably tackle both at once in about a year. I'm forced to do mine after work and weekends since I work full-time.

Bear in mind it's not cheap - for the Maths alone its ~R2400 p/m and double this if you're also planning on doing Physical Science - I will say that Master Maths is by far the best option I've come across particularly for someone like me who needs that extra bit of assistance and making sure the concepts sink in. They also allow you to re-write your exams at one of the centers when the time comes for finals. If you don't mind being the oldest person in the class like in my case, I suggest they would be your best bet - give them a quick Google.

Thanks for the info. 10 years later I want to improve my maths and will check them out

I cannot say - from the research I've done for entry into any BSc Degree (from a reputable South African university) Maths is non-negotiable. In my case I am looking to do a BSc in Computer Science from Wits which requires a 70%-79% pass rate in maths, yet no Physical Science requirements. Other universities like UKZN require both Maths and Physical Science at a pass rate of 60%-69% - so it depends on where you're trying to go and what you're trying to do. Research the heck out of what you're planning on doing and have several back-up plans is my advice.

E.G If I can't make the required cut for Wits the next best option is UJ since they have a lower APS requirement and lower Maths final pass mark requirement.

Any reason you can't self study such as khan academy?

Thanks for the reply. R57600 is no joke for just 2 subjects. I just got a quote from Intec, R7000 for a 12-month course, for both Math and Science, starting next year.

Thanks for this, will definitely be using this to supplement my lectures. I think taking lectures will help more than doing self-study, maybe it would be different had I taken math and science and failed them, but I'm new to both of them. Definitely using this Khan site though.

Where would one write the exams if they self-studied?

With khan you can start at any level you feel comfortable at - so start from Grade 5 if need be and then progress at your speed. You could save a lot of money if you use their site properly, everything there is probably better than any course you will go pay for.
Once you have finished matric level you can then do past papers.

Thanks, I'll have a proper go at self-studying using this resource, and see how I go with previous exam papers before registering for the 12 month course at a college in September. With the Math, I see there are grades, there aren't any for science. How would you know which material is essential for the science exam? Is it everything under "Science & Engineering" or just the "Physics, AP Physics 1 & AP Physics 2"?

I have focused more on the math section of Khan, so can't advise re the Physics side, but you may also want to look at Vodacom free e-school:
