How long does it take to transfer a domain from the epp system to another service provider? Is it still the same process that sends out tickets and is transferred after 24 hours?

Can you transfer a domain from the epp system to a service provider on the legacy system?

EPP-to-EPP domain transfers are instantaneous!

The gaining registrar must submit a domain transfer request via the EPP system. The losing registrar will receive an email (similar to a ticket, but not really) with two clickable option links: to either Accept the transfer or Deny the transfer.

As soon as the Accept link is pressed, then the domain is immediately transferred to the new EPP registrar. Quick and easy! Changes to DNS Nameservers are also instantaneous. No more 24-hour waits!

Unfortunately, you cannot transfer a domain that is on the EPP system back to the Legacy system.

Legacy-to-EPP Transfer: Yes (24-hour wait)
EPP-to-EPP Transfer: Yes (Immediate)
EPP-to-Legacy Transfer: No

A bit more to the transfer process, and one that often gets a few raising questions

A domain may not be transferred during its Anniversary Period. The period is 3 days prior to its expiration up to the 5th of the following month as well as the first month of its registration. This means that if a domain's anniversary is on the 10th, it cannot be transferred from the 8th of the anniversary month until the 5th of the following month.

Furthermore, a domain cannot be transferred in the first month of its registration. Registrars must please take serious note and plan to transfer domains prior to or after the Anniversary Period.

More clarity on the matter here

thanks for the input. Does the renewal process remain the same where the domain remains active after the renewal date and you have 3 months to make payment for the renewal?

Domains which reside on the EPP system are renewed on the date of renewal provided that :
The domain's status is set to renew and the RAR has sufficient funds with Registry Services.
If the domain expires, the domain immediately goes into suspension.

Heres the splurb from the Registry

If a domain has expired, it enters the deletion phase. To re-instate the domain, a Cancel Pending Action has to be performed. Please see here on how to perform the action.
Please take note that if you cancel a Pending Deletion or Pending Suspension event leading from a domain expiry, the domain will be renewed and the registrar will be charged.

10. What is the process for Closed Redemption?
Closed Redemption is a state that a domain enters once it has expired and gone through the Deletion Phase. The Closed Redemption Phase lasts a total of 20 consecutive days from the end of the Pending Deletion Phase, and is terminated if the domain is reinstated. The process is as follows:

1. The domain will expire
2. The domain will go through the Pending Suspension and Pending Deletion Phases
3. After the Pending Deletion phase is over, the domain enters the Closed Redemption Phase
4. In the Closed Redemption Phase a domain can be reinstated at the cost of the Closed Redemption Fee
5. If a domain is not reinstated in the Closed Redemption Phase, it will be deleted at the end of the phase

Please take note of the following consideration related to Closed Redemption:

* A domain may be reinstated at the cost of ZAR200 (Two Hundred South African Rands)
* A domain will have the statuses "inactive", "pendingDelete", "serverHold", "serverTransferProhibited" with the message "Domain in closed redemption"
* A domain may only be reinstated by the current sponsoring registrar
* A domain will not enter the Closed Redemption Phase if a manual EPP Delete command was issued

How long are these phases? I assume the domain will be inactive, will it still cost R39 or R50 or whatever to renew while in this phase?
Once a domain has expired it remains within the suspension phase for 5 days, it then enters into deletion phase for 5 days and there after into closed redemption phase for 20 days.

The fees will differ according to what who you use for domain management and whether you have a RAR account.

Hope the above helps

I tried to transfer a domain name (away from the legacy system) that is due for renewal this month on 29 July 2014. The transfer was rejected because the domain name is currently in it's anniversary month. I don't understand this because based upon my interpretation of the aforementioned post the domain name is as of today not within the 3 day period prior to is expiration date. In other words, today is the 10th of July 2014, and it is my understanding that I can transfer the domain name up until the 25th or 26th of July 2014.

Can somebody please clarify this for me? If I am mistaken, then can you provide me with an example using the 29th of July 2014 as the expiration/renewal date and tell me when the deadline for transfer would have been?

I look forward to your response.

Hi mrleroux

Based on the information you have provided on the current domain, you will only be able to transfer this domain on the 6th of next month

Please take a look at this KB article

Thank you for your response. I have taken a look at the information via the url that you provided.

Please can you provide me with an example using the 29th of July 2014 as the expiration/renewal date and tell me when the deadline for transfer would have been (so that the transfer could have hypothetically taken place before the expiration date)?
