I'm a 12 percenter then... Donated four or five time a year for ages, then went and had myself a little infarction. Been back twice to check and double check but I'm no longer welcome for cookies and juice.

For the folk with needle issues, try this for size. Back in the day, we had a thing called National Service. Some of us were called up to SAMS (the medics) and a handful of those medics were chosen to be operational. Those unlucky few spent six months training, three doing weapons and tactics and three doing medical phase. Generally that meant nights at Hillbrow or Baragwanath hospital treating or assisting with casualties.
Doctors wouldn't let you just jump in 'tho, for drips and such you needed practice... So, on our first night at Hillbrow, our platoon were shown how drip needles worked, and just as soon as we had watched one being administered, our Corporal volunteered me to be the practice pin cushion for fifteen or so of my mates.
Fun fact: If your going to be trying multiple drips, they can't all go in the same place or vein. You start with the veins in the back of your hand and then move on up the forearm... Both arms in this case.
I suppose it's like jumping out of a plane if you have a fear of heights, but short of being impaled on an exhaust sized pipe, needles... Meh.

Not that I want to derail the thread any further... but you do realise that was a ticking time bomb in the making. The oppression of the majority of the population and keeping them 2nd class citizens was never going to have a good outcome.

Fun while it lasted I guess, now we see the oppressed ANC fck this beloved country to a pulp raping it's very essence and then I wonder... Was it really such a bad idea to prevent them from getting into power...

And if the masses were given access to education and opportunities instead of being subjected to Apartheid laws, do you think the ANC would have masses of uneducated followers now to keep them in power?

Done about 55 donations now. Last time was at the end of November a few days before the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour, it really affected my performance - but it is for a good cause.

Donated about 7 times now.
A few times in the Highveld and now in the Western Cape.
Because the Western Cape Blood Service is separate from the national blood service, I had to reregister and start from "0", so no free blanket last year.
K@k scared of needles, but it's for a great cause.

I donate every 56 days (when they call or sms me to let me know they are set up somewhere). It helps save lives so why not, I have an opportunity to contribute so I use it. I don't particularly like needles but its quick and really not that sore.

Do you bother to alternate arms? I think I will try that. Also don't like needles. I don't like the finger prick as well as the needle doing the extracting.

I don't alternate arms but my wife does, she is O- and they seriously want her blood (universal donor).

I don't really remember which arms was last tbh. They guys at the bloodbank call my veins hosepipes and say even a blind person will be able to get the needle in...hehe. Prob a good idea to alternate...will try and remember that. No visible marks or so, so don't think its a problem but a good point.

Yes that finger prick is sore...agreed!
