Donating blood

After the episode with the nurse (post # 53) they called me up about 9 months later and given the "urgent" story again, so I refused, citing this incident. I was told I had a bad attitude.

I notice some of you had really bad experiences while donating why not try another SANBS branch? You never know when somebody you know may need a blood transfusion especially during the festive seasons.

Honestly, just go and donate again, explain what happened to the nurse and I'm sure she'll try make it easier.
Tell her a paramedic told YOU to tell HER to go ACF! It'll be easier.

This is the vein I was referring too, if you can see it, you'll see how easy it is to NOT miss it.

In light of the road carnage over the festive season I'd encourage everyone to donate.

Went today (well the initial sample for screening anyway) - smooth & professional.

Gave up on donating. I'm naturally a thin person and I try my best to put on extra weight before going in but having to empty my pockets and taking off my shoes before going onto the scale then being told I'm just over the limit and I have to put on more weight and come back.

It got really annoying since I'm a regular and always tried to donate every 60 days.

Huh? I know some pretty young/skinny people that donate.

Whats the limit?

Yoh. Yeah then its maybe not such a good idea for you. Props for trying though. :)

I have donated regularly for the last 5 years now, I've never had a problem with the needle insertion or ever been mistreated, not one bad experience. I've recently started platelet donations, they tire me out a little more than a standard donation but I can do them more often. If you're a regular donor and do it at a center (not just a tent) I encourage you to apply for platelets!

Nope, they use my arms as pincushions, after four or five attempts I give up as I'm not comfortable with needles as it is.

I wanted to this weekend, but:

Since I'm not a regular donor, they will not use my red blood cells.
Looking at my donation history, it doesn't look likely that I will donate soon enough again for them to use my stored plasma
I took anti-inflamatories in the last 7 days, so they wont use my platelets.

I want to be sure that they will at least use some part of my blood before donating.

Not a regular donor, then what, do they chuck your blood away? Or only use platelets?

The idea is that you become a regular donor and then they will use all your blood everytime. It is international best practice.

Also B+.
Every time I am due for a donation they call me and ask me to please donate. Don't know if they do that to everyone.

Started donating when I was 20 (almost 50 now). Missed very few donations since then (mostly when I was overseas for work).

It is the best thing you can do.

Last time I did this was in high school and cause of peer pressure. Needles squick me.
