'Don't blame apartheid'

If that is true then it is just simply shocking. Mathematics is the basis for very many things, including logic. This definitely explains why BSc (with Computer Science) degreed Tshwane and KZN university grads I've had the displeasure of working with don't even know how to follow the logic in a for loop.

It's all about tertiary institutions "moderating" their pass rates so as to ensure they get the grants to continue running. Most of them dropped entrance requirements a couple years back to get the numbers and now they are suffering the consequences. The company I'm currently doing some work for has experienced exactly the same thing with many grads - the result being that they now have "entrance exams" or "tech checks" before they'll even consider anyone for a job

It must be hard to teach people when Maths performance is so poor. According to the government, only 2000 black people IN THE WHOLE COUNTRY passed Maths at > D level (HG).

Do you have a link to this?

I dont know about the figure quoted here (that 2000 number) or where it comes from, but you can get the official figures from the government site
http://www.education.gov.za/dynamic...category=Parliamentary Questions&legtype=null
Look at the parlimentary Q & A 2 March 2007

The worrying thing about these statistics is the failure rates amongst black and coloured students. In most it is well over 50%.

Big problems here.

These figures indicate that 3338 black students passed Maths HG with a symbol C and up out of 29657 that enrolled to write.
Out of the whole country then we had less than 30 000 black HG maths candidates.

STD grade 234401 wrote, 77230 passed

The science stats are not any better.

Wow - maybe my 1990 SG pass is worth something since I am in the field of stats and work internationally...
Maybe I'm special :D

Problem is Verwoed was the biggest communist of all in his policy of "all for one, and none for all," which is how come 'they' were so long lasting (including the skewed vote system.) Notably we are still suffering the legacy today, prime example telkom.

Heh... this debate is going astray...
Blaming Verwoed for Telkom is like blaming him for the current Government's attitude (majority shareholder)...
oh... wait... maybe you're right.

Yeah, they are confused... my kids (EC) are writing exams - one was written today. I think some journo just wants to create confusion in favour of the strike?

Lol - just chuckling at your sig and your last comment dlk001!

"I think they are better because at least, they are allowed to write on HG.
