Don't buy that Playstation!

useless you are missing the issue, it's great that they can now play a lot of old games but why pay R6700 for a machine that plays the same games as a R1400 machine?

There is still no reason for Joe Soap gamer to fork out huge amounts of money for a PS3, if sales don't increase quickly there is no financial reason to develop exclusively for the PS3 which means there is no reason for Joe Soap to buy it which means.... you see the cycle that they need to break?
 
We always see these arguments once a new console gets released. None of the consoles that's out at the moment was flooded with good titles in the first year or so.

Nintendo's market share was decimated by their own stupidity. N64 using cartridges instead of discs. Gamecube using mini-discs instead of full size. Bullying developers. Their dominance made them arrogant and stupid.

The original Playstation brought completely different games to the market.
 
Doesn't anyone play a game because they're attracted to that specific game. I've mentioned this before, but if you like shooting people in the face, who cares what the make of the console is, just buy the Xbox360 for Gears and Halo. If you like dragon riding, get the PS3... you know the rest... RTS = PC blah blah blah. If I love, beyond everything in the world, a game of Pong, should I care about the systems, their sales, their marketing... no! just give me the game. Now shut up and go play some games. Fanboys are so lame. If, for every word you've written and rewritten defending or attacking a console, you'd instead practiced your favourite game, you'd be a much better player than you were before. And boasting rights are worth a zillion times more kudos than owning one system over another. Stop being lame.
 
Well Natas and I had an awesome time last weekend with a Wii60 setup, played Wii Play, Wii Sports, a little Gears, Paper Mario, GH2, Splinter Cell Double Agent, Lost Planet and res Steel.

I think that with a Wii60, there's really no compelling reason for a PS3 at all.

If you can afford to buy a platform for a single game that's one thing, as is if consoles were only R1 or 2k and you could buy it on a whim for a game. But when you're talking R4k - R7k for console, or even just a graphics card, that's a big chunk of cash and most people can only afford one or the other, and deciding which is a minefield.

This time in the console cycle is crucial, as has been said before, the more consoles sold the more titles available on the platform, the more value you see for your own investment. There's going to be a lot of conjecture and discussion around the subject until the market settles, which doesn't look like it will for some time to come.

If you're not interested, don't read the threads. Simple.

Yeah as GM pointed out, no-one is about to buy a PS3 to play PS2 games. Well maybe some government departments might, but not gamers.

The PS2 didn't have real competition when it came out. People had to wait. Now the PS3 has to deal with the XBox which is cheaper, has had a years head start and it attracting developers like mad. But thats not all. They have to deal with the WII. Nobody predicted the silly little machines huge success. I think Nintendo are eye the PS2s record sales now. Something neither the 360 or PS3 can do in their wildest dreams.

I think there are some interesting lessons in market research to be had here.
 
i will always get the xbox cuz lately i have discovered xbox live and trust me... ps three has got nothing on that. we do need ps three to survive though so we get some healthy competition... but the argument that u can play ps2 games while you wait for decent titles is a waste of 6000 rand. rather wait for the price to drop.

Well duh, obviously. But it's a big selling point. Same as the BluRay, not a lot of people will buy it JUST for BluRay, but it's a good addition to the console.

Yeah I agree. But thats the problem. There are too many cool additions which are forcing the price up. With less of these "nice to haves", Sony may find that they can actually get people to buy it in sufficient numbers.
 
Can you currently get a high-def dvd player for less than R6k in this country yet? Even if I wasn't into games, if I've got bucks and have forked out R30k for a 50" LCD or whatever I would really to watch high-def DVDs on it.
 
Buying a PS3 as a BluRay player does not help Sony in the console wars.

I may help them in the format wars but even then it won't be a killer blow.

Also how many people do you know with a 50" HD TV?

Not that many but you get the drift. As far as HD DVD players go, the PS3 is going at a steal.

As far as a gaming console goes, the PS3 is daylight robbery. So I guess the PS3 is the Robin Hood of the electronic entertainment world. Robbing from the rich Gamers to give to the poor movie enthusiasts? (Got to be poor after buying a 1080p HDTV). ;)

If the cheapest hamburger you can get costs R500, it's still a rip off, because nothing exists in a vacuum.

R6500 (+ at least R6000 for a HD telly) just to have a slightly less fuzzy picture (even less when considering upscaling) is ludicrous. You have to have more money than sense to consider anything near that "worthwhile".
 
Also, in terms of BR players it is going at a steal but def not for HD-DVD players. In the US, HD-DVD players are going for $250 compared to $599 for the PS3. All in all though, to go hi-def as u said Doobi, it's out of reach of most of the households in SA. By saying go for PS3 because it offers BR is shallow. An investment into the a new HD TV would be cost prohibitive than most.

Until MGS4 and FF13, Sony has nothing to show at the moment that the 360 cannot compare to. Sony's arrogance and miscalculation on this is going to be prove costly though BR might win the HD race.

I read somewhere that PS3 production units are decreasing whilst Wii is, expectedly, rising. That means a price cut for a PS3 wouldn't be foreseen anytime soon.
 
Disagree on it being an overpriced gaming console sure. Have you seen how much money audio/ht-philes throw at their setups? Get a copy of Home Theater magazine. R6k is PEANUTS.
 
Yeah but the funny thing is that audiophiles are NOT buying into BR & HD-DVD as yet... check out lazygamer's article on how the top makers of audio systems have not jumped on the HD bandwagon.
