You're right there, but unfortunately, those types of customers aren't good for Sony's bottom line, they're costing them money, because generally, they're not buying gamers, and you need to buy some insane number or BR movies to make up the $300 loss on the box with BR royalties.

Yeah but the funny thing is that audiophiles are NOT buying into BR & HD-DVD as yet... check out lazygamer's article on how the top makers of audio systems have not jumped on the HD bandwagon.

Well that just goes to show there isn't one determined winner yet. I'm yet to see ANY HD-DVD (in player or media format) being promoted locally. The only reason I'm swaying towards Blu Ray is because, here, in South Africa (not in quoted articles from overseas) they are winning purely because HD-DVD and it's affiliates haven't pull their fingers out their ar5es to promote anything.

HD-DVD's are sold on Take2 at a cheaper price than BR movies. Does that tell you something? If and when a HD-DVD dealer does pop in SA it could hurt the BR market very badly.

Take2 are hardly local distributors. If they could find a legal loophole to import and sell Russian brides they probably would. I don't think an HD-DVD dealer would hurt as much as that LG drive that can read both formats. If that comes in at a competitive price it would be awesome.

Disagree on it being an overpriced gaming console sure. Have you seen how much money audio/ht-philes throw at their setups? Get a copy of Home Theater magazine. R6k is PEANUTS.

Having an option of obtaining it localy doesnt need a distributor. Take folk who bought the first Xbox & X360's into SA. Its possible, worth it and fun.

Take2 provide a place for local people who are shy of importing for themselves a place to buy products that are not distributed locally or are, but at a higher price.

Blu-ray is probably on the shelves here because Sony needs movies available to give the PS3 some credibility. As far as the format war is concerned South Africa is irrelevant.

If you could take off your blinkers for TWO seconds you'd see that Microsoft is showing us the middle finger by not bringing out the HD-DVD player here.

Very true, especially if manufacturer of said console produce a dedicated player that costs $400 more than the console. As Sony are so keen to try and exploit in the games market, it's not about fact it's about perception.

Unfortunately we are still treated like the technological backwater, however I am in no mood to lose R8k on a blu-ray or HD-dvd player and then the other side wins..

I am starting to side with the camp that thinks neither will win though.

I was talking about the home theatre reviews not punting the HD-DVD player, anywhere.

Those are outright comparisons of Blu-ray players specifically to benchmark the PS3, they specifically don't include HD DVD!

Took them off for FIVE seconds, just to be sure. Oh wait, I didn't have any blinkers on.

Microsoft, likely in conjunction with their distributor, probably don't perceive much demand for HD generally in South Africa. On the other hand Sony has to use the blu-ray player as a selling point so they have to make sure there are movies available, even if they are hugely overpriced. If the 360 was more expensive and included an HD-DVD drive, then Microsoft would be using that as a selling point and have to make sure there were HD-DVD movies on the shelves.

With the low prices of HD-DVD players overseas I can't see why anyone would want to buy the 360 drive unless it is significantly cheaper.

You're talking about people who will pay hundreds of Pounds for "special" power and audio cables. The fact that the PS3 is a game console is going to make them suspicious. Maybe its game hardware creates discontinuities in the space-time continuum producing distortions only audiofools can see.

Its marginally cheaper. Overall I agree, the Xbox360 is the better gaming console. I just wish MS would drive the HD / HT market here a bit more...infact at all.
