Hi guys,

This morning i stopped at a petrol station.
Proceeded to throw in fuel as I do every Wednesday at this garage.
They have a standard bank machine,I have a capitec card(debit) that i use as a "petrol card",i only really keep my petrol money on there. They inserted the card, added in all the deets and i keyed in my pin.
The machine indicated that it was processing the transaction, after some time it timed out with disconnected status.
No slip from the machine to indicate a failed transaction. No sms from my bank to say it went off either but i was skeptical so i waited 5 min.At this point i thought okay, maybe it didnt go off,so they re ran the request from the same machine, which went off immediately.

This is where it got hairy,I received 2 smses to say the amount went off.I called capitec and they confirmed that the amount had infact gone off twice, however they see it as a legitimate purchase therefore they cant reverse it.
The manager on the other hand says that Capitec should do this for me however he took my details and said he'll "see" what he can do.

Heres my question, what can I do to have this one charge either reversed or refunded?
I was thinking of getting a statement from the bank and going back to the garage with the receipt of the transaction?

Any advise other than using cash for fuel(which is what im really considering after this whole ordeal)

The fuel station should re-imburse you.

Had this at Pick 'n Pay a few months ago, but they weren't such dicks about it. The wife just showed them the bank statements and got the money back cash.

Okay cool.Guess I need to get the statement and go back there either today or tomorrow

Wait until tomorrow. I had this happen to me before and the problem got corrected within 24 hours.

Sounds like they're unwilling to help though.

The problem for the bank is that the transaction was legit, and they can't control your or the garage's money unless the movement was fraudulent, which unfortunately it wasn't. The money is now in the station's account, so unless they're nice about it or you take it to court, you're not getting it back.

I'm gonna bet they'll play hardass until you give up and leave it.

Which bank are you with?
Guess all i can do is wait, but according to Capitec,it doesn't look like a problem on their side, apparently the first purchase went off ,then 5 min later a second one went off,so it looks like legitimate transactions to them, hence the reason why they said they cant really help

It's definitely the petrol station's responsibility. Maybe ask the petrol attendant to go to his boss with you and confirm.

That's the thing,we went to the manager afterwards and he wasn't all that interested in helping.just blamed the bank

Was also on Capitec. Just give it a day, the owner will probably also be more eager to help if he can see the funds have cleared twice.

Then statement from the bank and go back to him.

It's not for Capitec to determine if the transaction is legitimate or not. If you tell them the transaction is fraudulent then they have to act on it and reverse it.

The fuel station can reimburse you. They made double profit after all. The bank can only intervene if there was fraudulent activity. The petrol station manager should know this by now.

If he doesnt want to reimburse you he should at least give you a gift coupon to the same value so that next time you go there for fuel you just give the coupon.

Either one of two things is going to happen.
Either the bank will pick up the transaction numbers and see that its a duplicate and return the money to you or
You will need to go to the garage with a statement from the bank and show it to them.

There was a Shell garage in Bedfordview that often had problems with there card machines, and some duplicate transactions were returned within 24 hours (sometimes even immediately) and some had to be reversed by the garage themselves

Double charging a customer and refusing to reimburse them is fraud.

The attendant didn't double charge him on purpose though - read my first post in here about Pick 'n Pay. Sometimes the transaction fails, you do it again and it turns out both went through.

The bank will not see it as fraud just because the manager/owner is a hardass about it. In my eyes it's stealing, but OP would need a case number etc. for it to become a fraudulent transaction, I presume.

It is actually a problem with the bank. I saw two (different) shops lately and a service station with notices put up telling customers about this and that the bank will automatically reverse the transaction and they don't actually get the money so they can't refund you. It has something to do with you bank sending an an authorised sms and then sending a declined status to the machine.

If I am not mistaken, one of the notices I saw was a letter from the shop's bank.

This has happened to me as well, it is unfortunately not on the onus of the service station to refund you as they are not responsible for the problem.

Clarify it with a bank statement. Next week Wednesday, fill up and pay in the difference. (Voucher) per se. Everyone is happy.
