Downgrade = Faster browsing!

I had 384k for about a year a few months ago... then upgraded to 4mbit, then cursed at myself for not upgrading sooner :p

I had 384 for about 6 months, then 512 for more than a year, then the lovely 4096 since last year ;) Yay! :p 8mps sooon..... :p

I had 384Kbps for about 2 months, spending the vast majority of my budget on bandwidth (IS Uncapped Express, actually). Then I got greedy, upgraded to 4Mbps (at the expense of much reduced monthly bandwidth consumption) but started downloading torrents that would average about 5x the speed and downloads that could have a burst speed 15x higher, and never looked back.

I have been using vodacom HSDPA (3.6 and 1.8) for a while, and recently had a 384k ADSL line installed. My Browsing is much faster on ADSL..but yes those large file downloads are a pain. I seems thats the faster Line speeds are only good for file downloads..makes no sense, unless the overhead is higher thus it does'nt realy benefit smaller files ??

My friend used to be able to load youtube videos ultra fast on a 384, once he upgraded, it was slow :/

BS.. my 384 was like riding in a beetle then i upgraded and it was like driving in a ferrari F430 :p maybe your friend needs to upgrade his computer to keep up with his 4mbit line

Add to the list improved video calls on Skype.

Just talked for 30 mins with a relative in the UK without experiencing any dropouts and video was as smooth as I have ever seen it on Skype.

On the 4Mb line this was never the case.

Very interesting, Borg. I guess the R110 (?) downgrade fee was worth it for you ;)

Do you mind sharing what your pre-downgrade (4Mbps) line statistics were and what they are now?

Did you ever do a speedtest.net test using the 4Mbps? Have you done one after your downgrade for comparison?

R413/pm - R152/pm = R261/pm savings. You can multiply this by a factor of 10 because any money that do not finds its way to the Telkom Overlords's pockets is a bonus! :D

My SNR on the 4Mb line was 20db and it has doubled to 40db now.

I checked Speedtest.net a lot of times and for the last few months I could not even reach 1Mb/s locally or internationally. My multiple-thread downloads also slowed down where they used to reach 430Kb/s in the past.

Edit: I now see you were referring to the downgrade fee, not the monthly saving. The ****ers charged me R330 for that!

Your browsing would most likely be even faster on 4mb ADSL, the reason there is a thread for this (384 being faster) is because it's not normal.

You can't compare HSDPA to ADSL with just line speeds. ADSL is faster in browsing regardless of speed because of the latency and stability when compared to wireless.

I tried unplugging the filter and just connecting the router straight into the phone line and the sync loss issue disappeared for a while but alas, it happened now even without a filter.

The modem MUST NEVER be plugged into the filter, but mus ALWAYS be plugged into the line. Only analogue devices need the filter.

Bekdik, I think he menas he tried with the filter and telephone line unplugged?

Also I had iBurst for around 9 months or so...
THen I got 384K in November or so and 384K was slower or around the same as iBurst...then Feb I got 4Mb and I cant live without 4Mb ;) :D
When I was limited to 512K down on my 4Mb line...I DIED!!!

I couldnt download and browse at the same time, pages with loads of pictures would like freeze basically. I couldnt download and play at the same time...downloading took FOREVER!!
It was really irritating :(

Wow :o

I'm certain that RouterStats is not reading your router's statistics properly. Sometimes it goes wonky on me, too.

What's weird is the consistency of the fluctuation of your noise margin (towards the right side of the graph). I'm no engineer, but I would guess that uniformity like that implies interference from something.

Let's wait and see if you can get a more accurate graph...

Well I have a Telkom router and those things aren't exactly cutting edge so yeah, you're right when you say it probably isn't reading the stats properly.

I'll definitely play around a bit more tomorrow evening to get it working right. If anyone else here has got RouterStats to work properly on a non-Netgear or any other router not already confirmed to work with the software, please post exactly what you did.

Well, I think you need to set the 'Router Search Text'. Under Configuration, Router Login & Logout tab, paste the URL of the router's control panel web page that displays your line statistics, as well as your router's username/password. Next, click on the Router Search Text tab, click Get Page, and then select each of the individual figures, to map them to the buttons on the right. You can set User 1 and User 2 to your line attenuation figures. Once you have done that, click the Test button to see if it is picking up the figures correctly.

I did exactly that. ;)
