Hey everyone!

I am on 512kbps line with Web Africa. When I download files the maximum rate that it achieves is 50kbps..

Is this normal? I have absolutely no idea. It seems pretty slow to me. Its not a major problem as I don't download music or movies or anything like that. Only basically game patch's.

But if anybody knows what my download rate should be please let me know. And also if possible suggest ways in which I could fix it :)

The 512kbps is in bits per second and the 50kpbs is in bytes per second. There is 8 bits in 1 byte so with a simple calculation you can see 512/8=64 which puts your 50kbps at a good rate for a 512 ADSL service.

So in a nutshell...Yes it is normal...

great thanks for the quick reply!

was secretly hoping it wasn't normal so I could do something about it (live outside range for 4mbps line) but I guess not.

thanks again

You usually get a maximum of about 80-90% actual throughput of what your line is synchronizing at.

With my 4096kbps connection I max at about 420kB/s, which is 82% of 4096kbps.
With my 384kbps connection that I had, my downloads maxed at 41kB/s, which is 85% of 384kbps.
