Drivers face hefty fine for texting while driving

Good
I struggle to think of a more idiotic thing to do than texting while driving.

Agreed. The fine is too small. It should be at least R10,000 - plus the asswipes should be forced to do community service, cleaning up at fatal car crashes.

Great they will clamp down. I see people driving with phones almost every day in spite of the regulations, and they are often driving badly and getting in the way.

Question though : why just texting? Should be illegal to read a book, play snake II, argue with Siri, browse for a pancake recipe, check e-mails etc etc as well? :D

Yeah hectic stuff hey and it happens all too quickly while texting, they should implement this cellphone stuff all over the country but the reality is the cops dont bother enforcing it.

I see this being hard to enforce.

If you're fiddling with it, it's a fine anyway. The phone should not be in your hand when the engine is running.
Why? I'm allowed to fiddle with my radio, amongst several other gadgets in my vehicle. And that's while it is moving not just some silly nonsense about the engine running.

Law is the Law.

R250 fine for having the phone on you such as in your hand or on your lap.
R500 fine for actually using the device.

R750 fine for both...?

I'm not sure why this law is specified to texting when it the same as just using your phone while driving...?

I tried to argue the point with a metro cop and he brought out the rule book and let me read it for myself.

I think the point is that the rules aren't consistent. Just because they are in the rule book doesn't make it right or wrong :)

i agree [texted from my phone while driving :P]

ROFL [while driving]

I don't like people who use their phone while driving, you included

So what does your moral compass tell you, is it right or wrong?? I've seen accidents happen, because of idiots using a phone while driving.

I got pulled over 2 weeks ago when I turned a corner and the cops saw me talking on the phone. Or rather, I got pulled over by a cop who got signalled by another that I was talking on my phone. When I asked the officer who was to about to write me up why he is basing the fine on hearesay from one of his colleagues, he promptly called his colleague over who, after a quick question/answer session as to when/where he spotted me, didn't recall where I came from (they were pulling cars/taxis over like mad at the time). The two of them argued in Xhoza as to which of them saw what before I interrupted them saying I was not prepared to sign the fine on the basis that there is a dispute as to what they saw me doing. Was let off whilst they were still arguing.

And yes, I agree that talking/SMS'ing on your phone whilst driving is dangerous - the story above serves as an example on how carefully the Police have to go about when enforcing this law.

seen too idiots yesterday. how they will avoid an accident im not sure. idiots..

Wrong, obviously. But that doesn't excuse things that are completely legal, like speaking to your passengers or fiddling around with the radio.

My daughter is deaf because of an idiot using his cell phone & not bothering to brake in time to avoid us.

It makes my blood boil to hear the facile justifications of self-righteous !@#$es who think that it'll never happen to them.

As far as I'm concerned, my phone is there for MY convenience, if someone wants to communicate with me they can jolly well wait until I feel safe enough to respond.

Can't wait for Google Glasses (2014) / affordable vehicle HUDs connected with your phone/tab.

Until then, audiobooks will have to do.
