I know you have to go online and register - but it's a mission and there are NEVER slots available.

I'm now expired and risk a fine - but was wondering if insurance pay out if anything happens ?

Insurance will not pay if an unlicenced driver is driving. If your licence has expired, you are unlicenced.

Also wanted to ask, is it only Gauteng residents need to do it online?
The guys in Cape Town does not have to, right?

No, you're still licensed - and you're still covered.
I stand corrected.

Concerns have been raised that insurance companies could reject claims over expired drivers licenses.
National Chair of the Justice Project SA, Howard Dembovsky, says the driving license document is valid from the time you pass a driving test until such a time it is suspended or canceled.
Dembovsky says it is the driving license card that expires every 5 years and requires renewal.
Any insurance company that were to try and repudiate a claim on the basis that your drivers license card has expired could find themselves in hot water when the matter goes to court

The fact is your driving license never expires but your driving license card expires. It is a requirement of the law that you carry it with you whilst driving

A person who's license card had expired is not unlicensed, that person is still licensed. They are just incapable of producing their driving license on demand to a traffic officer.

Went to do mine today. Maybe this will help someone:

Ended up booking and going to Sandton DLTC (booking was done about a month back). I could not find a slot in PTA so I took the Sandton slot as soon as I saw it.

Check for slots daily (someone mentioned checking on Mondays as they allocate slots then apparently).

I did eye tests at Specsavers beforehand - this was free.

Even though you have the eye tests done, you still have to queue at the eye tests section because they do the photos, finger prints and other data capturing there as well.
After this you need to queue at the payment section.

What to take:
- The completed form that you get when booking online.
- The booking info.
- Your ID book and old drivers license card (I only needed the ID book because I had lost old my card).
- A copy of your ID (mine was not certified and it was ok)
- 2x ID photos (got some from Q-Photo beforehand) they used one on the application and one for my temp license.
- Debit or credit card. Note that Sandton accepts card payment only. It was R228 for the renewal and R70 to get a temp license. Akasia in PTA only wanted cash IIRC.

They said to collect in 6 weeks' time. Holding thumbs.

How does the notification work (when ready for collection) - Email or SMS?
If by SMS, do they send to the number on the online application, or to the one registered on the AARTO account?

i did mine in somerset west last week, just walk in and 3hrs later done
i was stupid and went on a friday
i forgot they do motorbike drivers as well on that day
so it was busier than usual, normally every 5yrs i am in and out in 45 minutes

and no you are still covered by insurance company if your licence card is expired.

The SO has to do her one and cant seem to get a booking in Randburg? I have told her to be on the site before 8 am and to ctrl+F5 sharp at 8am. but nothing.. Still no booking available. Can she still walk in?

Most have signs saying no walkins.

She must try Monday and Wednesday mornings between 8 and 9 as this seems to be when the slots are opened. From what I saw, the various office open up slots for an entire week at one time, they don't seem to update daily.
