Drivers License Card Renewal

@Dolby on the eNatis site, check on Monday morning from around 07:30 for slots. That's when they open up. Don't wait too long or they'll be gone. I'm also expired - like 2 months already, but got a temp on the renewal date, so at least I'm good now. Report back when you've got the booking on where/when and I'll give more tips, it's a story these days :D
 
How far in advance can you book? Mine expires March 2020..can I apply in Jan 2020?
 
If your passport expires do you stop being a South African citizen? No, of course not. A card is just proof of your licence, it is not the licence itself. The requirement to renew your card every five years is nothing but a money making racket in any case. Most other countries only require you to renew every 10 years.

Geez, that's what I told my wife last night, passports renewal, drivers renewal, etc. These are all just money making schemes for the government.

Mine expires in October and I also went to go renew last week because I don't trust how long it's going to take given all the recent problems they've had printing new cards. Technically there's no limit on how far in advance you can renew your licence. If they give you a hard time just tell them that you're going to be overseas when it expires so you want to get it done now.

Yes, I don't trust their 6 week turn around time either which is why I went early. Fortunately I wasn't asked the reason I came in earlier, even though that going overseas is my reason and I want to use my SA licence in the UK.
 
Strangely though, if your gun licence expires, you are no longer licenced and then your gun becomes unlicensed.

That's because they're trying to disarm citizens, but cars are still OK.
 
I think a lot systems are put and they waste a lot of productive time and money. One has to ask from work to now go to Sandton from Pretoria. It's not the only thing that had been introduced and not well thought out. An outcry was heard with the school online application system. Who suggests these things and who are they actually benefiting. I wonder if as a nation we are at that point where we all have access to internet in every household so that such things are not a hustle to anyone. Or some people are going to be innovative and form companies to assist people who cannot do these things for themselves. And charge obviously.
 
I applied for my renewal at Hillstar CPT on 20 Nov 2018. My licence expired on 20 Jan 2019. Was told 6-8 weeks. Went there 7 weeks later - not ready. Then went weekly for abt 4 weeks. In Feb I was told that my image was rejected and I had to re-apply. The 6-8 weeks started again! Went again two weeks ago and was then told my fingerprints were rejected. Surprise surprise had to re-re-apply. Each time I spent abt 3 hours there. Last time there was about 10 people there, all applied last year and all had images or fingerprints rejected. Very suspicious!! People that applied in Feb and March received their cards. I was given a free temp licence in May which is valid for 6 months. SMS says I must contact my centre about my card. Same msg I got last time... will phone tomorrow and hear what has been rejected this time... So 6 months and counting and still no licence.

Did mine today. Quick and easy at Bellville, compared to an always busy Durbanville queue scenario it seems.

Wouldn't take the risk driving with an expired license due to the inconsistent insurance industry.

Mind me asking what time you went to the Bellville one? I need to go do mine next week, what did you need to take with? Photos and the DL1 form? Not sure which form to fill in lol.

In Cape Town the DL1 forms are not available to the general public, you have to queue up to get one from the enquiries office, and then when they give it to you they staple the one photo on it, and then write a whole bunch of stuff on it before handing it over to you for you to fill in.

While the officer will almost certainly hand out a fine, the actual legislation surrounding expired licence cards is a bit murky.

Thankfully, if you get into an accident before your card is renewed, your insurance should still be valid, although it is always best to check your terms and conditions to be certain. Justice Project SA head Howard Dembovsky believes that any insurance company that tries to challenge a claim on the basis of an expired card could find themselves in trouble if taken to court.

Correct. But if you forget to renew, with a car, you're not an "unlicensed driver". With a firearm, suddenly you're a criminal with an unlicensed firearm, which is not the case, because the firearm is still on your name. Only the card expires.
