Driver's license renewal

On the 4th of February I went to the Reyton traffic department in Pretoria to renew my license that expired on that same day... What a horrible experience that was - had to stand in lines for almost 6.5 hours but that's beside the point.

Anyway they said I should receive a letter telling me that my new license is ready for collection within 2 months as usual. Due to unforeseen events I'm moving down to Cape Town permanently over the Easter weekend and now I'm worried that my new license won't be ready for collection before I move down South. What options do I have? Am I going to have to go through the whole ordeal again? I don't know anyone in the area that can go and collect it on my behalf.

Mine and my mom's licence took only a week and received the slip in the post.

Anyone know if I can request for it to be sent to another traffic department? What are the chances that they'd get that right and how many hoops would I need to jump through?

How long can I use my expired license with the receipt to people that I've applied for a new one?

I picked mine up 8 weeks after the application and got the letter a day after that. The letter was postmarked 8 days after the application. (3 JEERS for the Post Office)

It's worth going in and asking if the card is there after 2 weeks. If you're lucky, the traffic department has a separate queue for picking up cards and it goes faster.

My wife went to Rayton two weeks ago and spent 45 minutes there. She went there at 2pm.

There were people arriving at 2 that got turned away as there was no way that they'd be helped when I was there, guess I went ona bad day.

In Cape Town at least, they say 6 - 8 weeks, but usually if you call them after 3 weeks your licence is ready to be collected already.

What happens with most testing licensing departments is that if there is an issue with your application - photos / fingerprints or whatever - they do not send you any notification, and you need to physically go there to check.

Happened to me when I renewed my license 5 years ago - did the application in time and 2 months later has heard nothing - went back to the offices where I did the application to be told that the application had been rejected.

Bit of a threadjack, but this seemed appropriate. My license was renewed at Randburg a few weeks ago and its ready now. Does anyone have any experience in going there to collect? I'm trying to figure out if it will just be a quick thing or an hour or 2 of standing in queues?

Oh dear, I went for my renewal there on the March 12. I will wait another week or 2 and then go and find out. I arrived there before 7 am, and was done before 11 am. Not too bad

I dont know about Randburg but at most testing stations the collection counter is always empty and sometimes not manned. So you will probably be in and out in 5 minutes.

Our collection counter is in a different building by themselves so it is always empty :D

Six and a half hours?! I went to Stellenbosch and renewed mine 3 weeks ago, it expires next month, there were plenty of people but it took me less than 45 minutes.

I was in and out of Randburg in 1.5 hours - which included waiting for them to open at 7:30 from about 6:35 or so.

Probably had about 85 people in front of me in the queue for eye tests and only had one operator doing tests and taking approximately 5 minutes per person. After a couple of hours somebody started doing eye treats at a second eye testing station which speeded things up slightly.
