Drivers License

If you indicate before looking, it shows other drivers that you're unobservant, and also can cause confusion because now other drivers don't know exactly what you're going to do. Rather look, indicate, and go.
I don't quite see how it shows you to be unobservant? Half the time you cannot see where other drivers are looking, so to be able to know if they've already checked their blind spot or not is not always possible anyway.

I also disagree that it can cause confusion, indicating is telling other drivers what you want to do, if I put my left indicator on and some guy claims he doesn't know what I want to do then he ought not to have a license.. :p
Unlike some drivers seem to believe, an indicator does not mean: "look out everyone I'm going left ready or not" it means: "hey everyone I want to go left". ;)

Also the K53 rule as far as I recall is: "check blind spot, indicate, check blind spot again and go" and this was my point. Why twice? I indicate to let everyone know what I want to do, then I check and if safe I move over.

If they'd checked their blind spot, and you were there, they would not have indicated, correct?

(Obviously, as you mentioned, in heavy traffic it may be necessary to indicate in order to let people know you'd like to change lanes, or you won't get a gap).

If they'd checked their blind spot, and you were there, they would not have indicated, correct?
So what you're saying is they should only indicate when it's clear to change lanes?
That seems a like a waste of time, if it's perfectly clear then one could change lanes without indicating at all.. :D

Bear in mind that "clear" means enough space, not a totally vacant road. Indicating provides warning, especially to others who might be intending to move into the same gap.

+1, but...

Real b@stard to prove afterwards when all your back lights are smashed to hell !!!

[EDIT] you should know at all times what is behind you - if some dude is missing / disappeared, should be asking where is this guy? ie in your blind spot maybe like a pig trying to pass you super fast......eg
Pitbull & and his custom copper clutch.....
for example

What is the purpose of walking around the car to “inspect” lights ect and who does that anyway? Wouldn’t it be better to open the bonnet and check brake fluid level for example? You’ll know when you approach your car that someones damaged it unless you half blind (and shouldn’t have a license anyway).

What’s the point unless all the lights and indicators are on and someone to push brake pedal cause how would you know if they functional in any event? Stupid k53 nonsense!

I always look in a shop window and the reflection in the car behind to check my lights.

Maybe someone smacked them while the car was in your garage or driveway…. Christine / Kitt wot did you do? bad car!

It's a way of filtering out the idiots who can't memorize a 20 point list.

Halfway through the list the inspector stopped and said its obvious that I learned the theory and we can skip the rest.

Hey Amen man. Don't worry, you're not alone and in CT its just as bad. I'm 21 now and still have no license. I'v failed 4 times in the yard, I havn't even gotten to the road yet. Any guesses on what they failed me on?

1st: Rolled (My fault)
2nd:Obs
3rd:Obs
4th:Obs

So I guess it's another year driving with no license. Great. Although I hear that over 20k drivers in cape town are driving illegally, not because they havn't got licenses but because they can't be bothered to sit in a 5 hour queue to get them renewed. It's actually gone from a worry to just being outright hilarious.

Oh I just read the thread about the cops wanted Lambos and Porsches as patrol cars. Priceless piece of humor there. How about trying to fix the licensing system first?

License to Drive 5 years of Pain& Suffering

Probably one of the most ridiculously difficult tests.

* If the car rolls back even a cm then you get automatic fail.
* Takes months to get booking, takes a second to fail.
* Traffic Cops all seem to share the ********* gene.
* Alot of things are tested which you will probably never do again in your life. e.g. pulling handbrake up when you fart
* Expensive process which might need repeating several times.
* Not a test of skill but a test of memory and meticulous gayness.

What's your views?

well, i agree with you mate.
for all you people who have and still are struggeling to get their license, i recommend watching the movie:
License to Drive (1988)
Les is a teenager attempting to learn how to drive, as well as catch the eye of a popular girl. He is able to secure a date with the girl, Mercedes, and it is assumed he will drive. But, he doesn't have his license yet. When it comes time for his driving test, he fails. He doesn't want to risk the chance at going out with Mercedes, so he decides to go anyway. Not only does he disobey his parents by going in the first place, but he takes his grandfather's prized possession - his Cadillac. Will he get through the night without wrecking the car, and get away with sneaking out, or will his plan collapse?

let me tell you my story:
i grew up in a small town in the eastern cape.
i got my learners license when i was 17, i got it the second time.it's easy to misjudge the learners test, lots of trick questions.so dont rush it and relax.
i must admit i was a bit lazy getting my full license at that time and i finished matric without a license.
after high school i went to the uk like many school leavers.
living in the uk without a drivers license is not as difficult as in south africa.
i road my bicycle to work those 2 years in rain and snow!
i thought if getting a uk license but the process was so long and expense over there, lots of pounds for driving schools
after a year in the uk i went back to sunny south africa for a month holiday to get some much needed vitamin D
i decided to give this whole license thing another go
by this time my learners license expired!
so i had to do that again, passed again the second time!
so now i had to get my full license, the town that i was visiting in the eastern cape did not have a big backlog of license appointments like the cities.
it was like that in 2005, might have changed now.
i booked and got an appointment a week or 2 later!
i failed 5 times for my full drivers test in a matter of a month!
the first 2 times i can admit i was not up to scratch but after that it just got ridiculus. after that my confidence was shot
i must have spend like R2 000 on something i cant see!
i thought i'd never get the darn thing.
and what got to me is the people who got their licenses so easy in life, like my dad. he's uncle was a traffic cop in the day and he just left a bottle of whiskey in the backseat! lol
my older brother got his the first time just driving in the yard.

well i went back to the uk for another year.
a year later i returned to south africa and stayed for a while in secunda.
my learners was still valid for another 3 months.
secunda's licensing centre is such a mess! i must have gone there like 4 times and each time different excuse, computer is off, no power, no space for bookings! dont try to go there on a friday!!!! they close at 1pm! wtf  so you wait in the sun the whole freekin day and they tell you come back monday!

so i gave up on secunda and decided that im going to drive without a license , so i did.
i moved to vereeniging and got a job as salesman. driving to work and home without a license for 6 months. and to make matter worse my manager was under the impression that i had a license cause i driving my car, so one day he asked me to take his jetta 4 and pick up a women in town for him!!!!
here's me driving the manager's jetta 4 without a license!

so later i decided to go to vereeniging testing station
my learners expired again!
so had to book for learners, waited 3 hours to get appointment.
i got one for 3 weeks later.
well the day of the learners test i was 5 minutes late, they just said you are too late, bye. no money back nothing
by this time i was getting sick  :D

it was about this time that i got the opportunity to go to new zealand.
i did and moved over here permanently.
so i had to do the whole license thingey over again  what a blast
new zealand's licesning is done by the AA, a private company working for land transport new zealand.
bookings for appointments are fast, it takes like 10mins!!! :)
so i booked for learners, went 2 weeks later and got it the first time !
the nz learners works the same as south african one, except you ave to wait 6 months to go for resricted license.
now new zealand has 3 license stages: learner, restricted and full
i passed my restricted first time aswell , up yours south african traffic dep !
the restricted enables you to drive alone, you may drive between the hours of 5am-10pm, you may only have passengers if you have someone with a full nz license seated next to you infront..
you can get an exemption to enable you to drive after 10pm, for working after hours. it's for special circumstances but usually they only give the exemption for 3-6months.

if you are under 25 you can go for your full license after 1.5 years having your restricted. you can reduce the time by 6months doing a defence driving course , which is a 3 day course. i was 23 at the time.
so if you are over 25 you can go for your full license when you have the restricted for a year.

i went and got my full license the first time!
so yeah im glad its over , so if anybody has any questions about licenses. im the guy to ask!!! lol

have a good day and dont give up

I personally know 2 of them. Both of them very nice ladies (when not driving)

Probably one of the most ridiculously difficult tests.

* If the car rolls back even a cm then you get automatic fail.

If I was the driver behind you at an intersection on an incline, I assume you passed your license and won't roll right back into my front bumper. ;)

* Takes months to get booking, takes a second to fail.
* Traffic Cops all seem to share the ********* gene.
* Alot of things are tested which you will probably never do again in your life. e.g. pulling handbrake up when you fart

With the exception of the checking the car before hand, I do everything still.

* Expensive process which might need repeating several times.
* Not a test of skill but a test of memory and meticulous gayness.

What's your views?

Not expensive if you pass the first time. Overall I think you one of those aggresive types that we don't need more of on these roads. Do us a favour and buy a BMW so that I can add you to my list of drivers to steer clear of on the road.
