Driving in SA deteriorating...

Deteriorating? It's always been kak. People are oblivious to the outside world and just do their own thing on the road.

Agreed. And it is especially prevalent on the highways and major through fares. I prefer the back roads, I am less likely to deal with these clowns on the road..

And, I've noticed the amount of people using the yellow lane to help speed up their morning commute has increased as well. This is specific to johannesburg as far as I can work out. More and more people in their own vehicles are driving like taxis. Most fun I have on the way is sitting with my car half in yellow lane on Grayston, blocking all the fsckers trying this move.

I noticed a few people now and then doing this in Cape Town, but I'm too scared to block them lol. :(

There are lots of idiots on the roads. An idiot in an anarok (probably wearing his wife's onder-rok) nearly took me out on Sat. evening near wadeville. How some of these idiots manage to live longer than 5 years after getting a driver's license remains a great mystery.

When they think they can get a bribe!

I think the problem with drivers in SA and in Gauteng in particular is this entitlement mentality.

How many drivers do you see talking on their cellphones? How many bitch and moan at getting speeding tickets when they were actually speeding? Everyone seems to have this "Not me" mentality. It wont happen to me because I am magically a better driver than anyone else. I am the only one who can have 6 beers and then drive home safely. I am the only one who can talk on my cellphone, or sms, and drive. Everyone else has to obey the rules because they suck, but not me.

And you try to explain to them that they are part of the reason why our roads the most dangerous in the world, and they dont get it! They think you are talking about everyone else on the road, about the taxis. Everyone blames the taxis (not that taxis are blameless), but nobody wants to take responsibility for themselves.

Because the limit was still 80 and I hadnt had a chance to move over? I dont know if thats the road, it is the one just before the Proefplaas interchange.

If the limit is 80 I'm doing 80. I just happened to be in the right hand because I had just overtaken someone, and the other guy (who may or may not be the OP) came screaming past me at 120 in an 80 zone. How would that even give me a chance to react and move over?

This is so true! as long as we have a entitlement mentality nothing will ever change!

I generally don't get riled up anymore, doesn't accomplish anything and nothing good ever comes of it.

However the lane hogging thing does still bother me because it adds to people's frustrations and is one of the main reasons for congestion. It's fine if you're overtaking, but regardless of your speed, move over when you're done. It's not your job to police other people.

Another new-ish trend that I've noticed. When people get onto an on-ramp and join a highway, most of them immediately make a dice for the far right lane and then crawl at their own pace :wtf:

I'm concerned about how badly people drive in SA

It's a losing battle but if you want to have fun with those people who insist on hogging the right lanes at 80km/h in a 120km/h:
Just over take, pull in front and slack off (or hit brakes if you're fuming mad).
Then let them over take you and rinse and repeat until the idiot gets the message (which most don't).
However the traffic police are the only ones with legal jurisdiction to enforce the traffic rules so don't be an idiot by trying to fix everyone else's poor driving habits.

I take the easy way out:
Left lane with cruise control set at 100 to 120km/h and watch all the idiots flash past on your right hand side.
It's just not worth getting worked up about.

However I have driven behind people who intentionally block the right hand lane by speeding up and slowing down next to the vehicles to their left.
If you try overtake on the left they accelerate until they are next to another vehicle and then slow down again.
I have no sympathy for them if someone takes them out in rage one day.

I agree with OP fully!! I hate traffic and the bastards that drive in yellow lanes, drive against oncoming traffic, bla bla!!! Will only change once the country's leaders gets replaced!!

No, Cape Town drivers are much worse. A revelation is to drive in a country where they obey the rules. Australia is amazing like that, as is Germany and Sweden. Swedish drivers are just considerate and just would not dream of behaving like the louts (both male and female) that sit behind the wheels of cars here.

Don't let me get started about Muslim lady drivers...

I do it every morning on the M5 going onto the N2 to Cape Town. i'm use to it already, so i cannot wait and see people pass and intercept me. it freaks the hell out of me.

KEEP LEFT PASS RIGHT (FFS) - dont sit in whatever lane you want at whatever speed you want AND LOOK in your FLIPPING mirror to see what CAOS you are causing behind you!!! And when you are in the far right hand lane at 80 and i cut in front of you - dont you DARE flap your hands at me - YOU are in the WRONG LANE at the WRONG SPEED!!! WAKE UP! or get off the road!!!

So many terrible things happen on the road and you pick this ?

This rule applies to highways with 3 or more lanes where traffic is flowing normally AND there is space to move over..... its such a small thing.

Why not bitch about people jumping lights, running stop streets, weaving though traffic, speeding, not indicating ?

This has been argued to death on MBB... do a search.

I do it but I only put half the car in the yellow lane and its mainly because everyone is blocking up the turning lane. I get on at Raapenburg and i'm trying to get to the M5 to Milnerton. Everyone sits in that lane for the M5 and tries to cut in to the n2 traffic to get in to town.

One thing I've learned is to keep calm and chive on :)
Getting all worked up in the morning will just ruin your day while the offender rolls by oblivious.
If someone is going slow in the right hand lane, use the lanes to the left, simple as.
You will never stop people being "clever" on the road and disrespecting fellow motorists and the way I see it you have two options; join them or be the do-gooder and rack up some karma :)

The other day I was overtaking some cars in the slow lane, just to get stuck behind a guy in an Audi S4 driving 40. I couldn't overtake him as the cars just kept passing us. I just shook my head and when a gap came I took it. As I was driving passed him he sped up and started shouting at me for shaking my head. So he called me a racist boer and that we must ***** out of this country because this country belongs to the black man. He then sped off. Ja boet, I'm the racist for knowing your a f&cking retard.

Don't want to stereotype, but they're not as bad as many black lady drivers, who are completely oblivious to the world around them.

Lol... agree here. Had one roll backwards into my A6 in her Tazz on the Barbara onramp to the R24. She just looks at me in her mirror and drives off. It was a mild bump in a small car so I left it.

I pretty much leave everyone to do what they want. Aging trends to mellow you out, and as long as no one endangers me, my family or my car, I could care less. *******s will be *******s and you can't change that.

SA would be a better place if:
- people wouldn't use emergency lanes as their "primary" turning lane (or to just going straight and cutting drivers turning left off)
- people wouldn't ignore slipways and rather turn at the traffic-lights
- people wouldn't lack common sense to understand that moving into a congested intersection in the orange phase will block all other traffic
- people wouldn't pretty much do anything they like in a traffic circle (including using it as a "quickly turn right opportunity")
- people wouldn't continue going across intersections once the lights change to red
- people wouldn't lack any respect and courtesy (i.e. lane joining, yielding)
- people actually stop at a STOP sign
- soccer-mums would not cause chaos with their clown-cars in peak hour traffic

Nothing easier for cops to issue spot-fines for any of the above violations and impounding cars after a number of digressions.

2 or more lanes, not 3 or more

Get a bike.

Even in a nice car you can only drive as fast as the car in front of you. On my bike I get to keep moving even in the worst traffic and I get to stop right at the front of the queue at every robot and stop street and from there I get to open up to my heart's content.

For me getting to work and back has become a pleasure and traffic has become a thing of the past.

OP, put yourself on two wheels before you have a stroke =D
