Driving with headlights on

Bollocks once again.

Amazing how you seem to think that your POV on this is the only logical one - this is a law in most FIRST World countries, where people actually consider road safety as being an important factor in their lives.

Lights are on TO BE SEEN - end of storry - all you need is to drive a grey/silver car through mottled sunlight that you would get when trees are throwing shadows across the road, and see how quickly it disappears.

Sadly, it's people with attitudes like yours that will always screw up any attempt at road safety in SA.

Please.

60 % of road accidents are caused by pedestrians, a lot by taxi's and drunk drivers.... how will having your lights on during the day fix that ?

Some arb statistic where they achieved a reduction in road accidents in a 1st world country means nothing here.

If that country was the UK, then it makes sense that it would make a difference.... does not translate to working here.

When every car has their headlights on ? and most chops put their brights on ?

I bet you are the king of d00s that does it ? Notice how other road users hate you....

I dont care what other drivers think, but as long as they see d00s me approaching with my lights on, Im happy and feeling safer.

On the positive note, you must be one of those "clever" guys who keep their lights off after the sunset, just because its not that dark yet and you can still see everything!

I usually put my headlights on when it's dark, overcast, raining, misty or foggy, however I really couldn't care less if someone else chooses to put their headlights on in the middle of a clear sunny day. It doesn't affect me one bit. I've never heard anyone express annoyance at people who do either, except for you.

I have had people signal to me that my lights are on in traffic. (Not on bright)

My lights are on auto and they stay on a while after sunset.

Well I can prove it works. I've yet to hit a somebody while driving on the pavement.

YES! 60% pedestrians, who didn't see the frigging car coming in the first place!

And once again, you have the arrogance to say that "you" think(?) that because it works to save lives in a First World country it won't work here.

Utter tripe!

Best you go and herd some nerfs a long way from any road that I'm driving on!

Oncoming cars with their lights shining in your eyes ? Thats more than enough reason.

Its retarded, makes no sense whatsoever.

In your eyes? Seriously? Not talking about brights here, just normal dipped beams...

I just leave my lights on permanently. (dimm). Car has a sensor that switches them off when I lock it. Plus living in the city means I rarely require brights to be on. If it can help just one person see me better and avoid an accident, why shouldn't I do it?

P.s - If a cars' headlights blind you during the day, no matter dimm or bright, then I don't know how you drive at night.

If you have a problem with dipped beam headlights during the day then you have no business even driving.

I agree that long distance driving you should keep your head lights on. Driving this past December to Namibia I noticed that when I kept my headlights on fewer people on the other side of the road would overtake as it is harder to judge the distance when the oncoming car has his headlights on. For the most part, city driving ect. I say leave your lights off during daytime as if everyone had their lights on it would be harder to spot motorbikes.
I think motorcycles would still be visible. The downside you mention regarding judging the distance of headlights applies to motorcycles too though. Combine that with the rapid acceleration they're capable of and you can have a situation where cars are aware of the motorcycle due to the light, but cause an accident because they misjudge its distance, speed and acceleration.

Must be a Cape Town thing, GP driver don't often drive with the brights on during daytime in my experience, even if the headlights are on...
Doubt it. In Cape Town it is quite common for people to not even put their lights on in pouring rain. Or they put on their park lights which are only visible from close to the vehicle.

Like I said... a lot of cars don't have fancy day beams, and others put their brights on.

Every car has dipped beams.
The brights thing is retarded but no one is calling for brights to be on...?

It doesn't really cost you nothing: your headlights use electricity generated from the battery charged up by the alternator which taps into your running engine which uses fuel.

Welcome to MyBB, but it costs YOU nothing if someone else does it, that what was commented in this thread...

Arguments in favor of the “Lights on” Campaign

It is easier to see cars in low light situations – especially oncoming vehicles
It is easier to spot cars in glare, shade, dusk, etc. when the vehicles drive with their lights on
Your attention is grabbed a bit faster and it gives a few spilt seconds more to react, adjust etc – split seconds that could make a difference in dangerous situations

I think this says it all. . .
