Drunk drivers slammed after two cyclists killed

KwaZulu-Natal transport head Willies Mchunu has lashed out at drunk drivers, saying they "deliberately kill other road users".

He was speaking after two cyclists were killed when a 33-year-old ploughed into them shortly after 5am yesterday. The two were part of a 40-strong training group riding along the M4 freeway in Durban, when the driver of a black VW Golf GTI crashed into them from behind.

I don't suppose the other 38 will be fined for cycling on a freeway.
 
So instead of being beaten til they're sober and locked up, they were just slammed to the ground?

I just don't understand this tbh.

I have driven drunk before and even did so again 3am Sunday morning. At no point did I drive anything faster than 40km/h it took me about 40 minutes to drive 10 kms. I'm not condoning drunk driving, I am however amazed at how people can go driving like maniacs and even more so knowing that they drank too much?

Hey I'm no saint, and I would like to hear someone say they have never driven after having a few. Thing is I know I'm drunk, not to drunk to drive but aware that my reaction times are pretty messed up. So driving at 40-50km/h gives me way than enough time to react. You get people who get drunk and then think they now know how to drive and goes 140 in a 60 zone and the likes...

While police and paramedics were on the scene, a second drunk driver crashed into one of the parked SAPS vehicles. He was also arrested.

We need to get this story sorted, drunk driving should have harsher punishments and be vigorously policed.

Certain sections of freeway allow for cycling, certain sections dont, depending on signage. The question is whether the minister actually has a clue about the legalities and where this actually happened.

Yeah, it's the question I was asking yesterday - and I've been getting conflicting replies.

Some say that cycling on any freeway is illegal and some say that it's not actually a freeway, that stretch of the M4.
 
i go to dbn about 2 to 3 times a year and hate driving there. they seem to condone a lifestyle of speeding and tail gating (did i say that right ?)

always some m0r0n sitting on my tail, and my god the amount of people that speed at more than what i can only assume is 180 or more there is astonishing and it seems the norm like there's nothing unusual about seeing people drive at breakneck speeds on those highways

dont get me started on 4 way stops in DBN - i swear 80% of their drivers arent licensed

i'm from pmb originally and the amount of kids that die every year because of racing is unbelievable - the culture needs to change in these places TBH - parents are okay with their kids taking daddy's car for a friday/saturday night race with the boys

Of all the horrendous habits of Durban drivers, this is the worst. 4 Way stops and people treating flashing red robots as if it where a straight green light. Almost got wiped out by someone cruising straight through a broken set of robots.. :mad:

The few times I have been to JHB was very impressed with how quick and seamless 4 way stops where treated.
 
The area where they were hit has an absolutely massive emergency lane (the size of a normal lane) which the cyclists were using. The driver who hit them was drunk and racing against another car. Story goes that these two were racing and he tried to pass the other car using the emergency lane, came round the corner going way to fast and hit the cyclists.
 
I know this is a bit off-topic, but I was wondering about the legality of cyclists riding on Clarence drive (that pass along the mountains and coast between Gordons Bay and Rooi Els/Pringle/Betty's Bay. It's a normal 60/70km/h road but it has no shoulder or even boundary lines for much of the distance, and cars already pass each other very closely around blind corners and narrow sections. Surely cyclists are considered a hazard on that stretch (as pleasant as I'm sure it is to ride)?
