Drunk drivers slammed after two cyclists killed

The area where they were hit has an absolutely massive emergency lane (the size of a normal lane) which the cyclists were using. The driver who hit them was drunk and racing against another car. Story goes that these two were racing and he tried to pass the other car using the emergency lane, came round the corner going way to fast and hit the cyclists.

Sounds plausible given the type of car, 40 cyclists are very hard to miss if you are driving at a reasonable speed.

I just don't understand this tbh.

I have driven drunk before and even did so again 3am Sunday morning. At no point did I drive anything faster than 40km/h it took me about 40 minutes to drive 10 kms. I'm not condoning drunk driving, I am however amazed at how people can go driving like maniacs and even more so knowing that they drank too much?

Lol

Firstly, the drunk idiot should be punished severely, jail, license revoked, car crushed.

Secondly, THAT area is NOT a cycling lane. The only portion of the M4 as far as I know that allows cyclists is when it crosses the bridge over the umgeni and that is clearly marked. The NMR however which runs parrallel to the M4 has a clearly marked cyclist lane as well.

Use Uber.
People are as amazed at you drunk driving as you are at people fast drunk driving. A car hits you, a cyclist rides into you - your being over the limit is going to be a real burden to your case.

Alcohol affects people's attitudes in different ways, no different to a drunk guy thinking he is bullet proof and picking a fight with a bouncer.

Oh... that pisses me off when there is a demarcated cycle lane and the guys drive in the road anyway.

Really sad that these guys were hit though.

By all means. I'm not asking for approval that I drove drunk. Damn, 98% of people on here have driven drunk.

I'm perplexed though that people know they have limited response times because of the consumption of alcohol but thinks it good to RACE? You are already breaking the law driving after having one beer, why push the envelop even more?

Drunk drivers need way harsher penalties. Don't care if you're going 10kmph or not, if you drink, stay the hell out of your car you twat.

I suppose this could be it, I too get wild when drunk. But driving it not something one should take lightly though. I honestly don't care for myself. But you owe it to others on the road if you really have to drive to not put their lives in danger. (Again, not condoning driving drunk at all) Being negligent while driving drunk though...

40 guys in that lane seems a little bit of a squeeze.... Would literally need to be one after each other to be safe!

And I agree 100%

I drove home Sunday morning knowing I wasn't going to get pulled over. If this was policed properly I would not even have taken the chance.

My mate's father was killed exactly like this. Just on a double lane dual carriageway. Speed limit of like 100 or 80, but the guy was estimated to be burning it at over 180. A 19 yr old in Daddy's car. My mate's father was cycling alone in the emergency lane (Wearing reflectives). A group of 20 Cyclists were on the other side of the road going in the opposite direction and witnessed it happen.

A few pay-offs, lost dockets and blood tests, and this little cnut is still free sailing it out there, 8 or so years down the line.

SA has no justice.

It's something one shouldn't do at all.

The problem though is where does one draw the line? I drove home purely because I didn't want to wake up in a stranger's flat the next morning. And not going to go back there to fetch my car .

Anyway, do you stop driving the moment you had your first beer? Do you drive when you feel you're still ok to drive let's assume mellow to be the word here? Or do you realise you can't drive the moment you can't stand no more? I think I'm ok to judge when I had enough as I need to drive still. But legally even one beer and you should not be driving.

In the UK, you probably wont get pulled over for drunk driving. I mean if it was put into percentage chance, SA has like a 0.02% chance and the UK has like a 0.5% chance or so. Either way, pretty insignificant chances. The difference is that in the UK, the people you are with will not let you leave drunk. And the places you go to have secure enough parking lots, and the taxi's are cheap and reliable enough; that you simply leave your car there and come back for it in the morning.
My wife had a single glass of wine with work colleagues many years ago, when leaving they all gave her a 10 minute grilling session about driving drunk.

It has far more to do with the society than the police is what I am getting at. Sure the UK might have stiffer penalties, but that is not what deters 95% of the potential drunk drivers.
