First of all, I'm not trying to start a war here.

I borrowed a friends' PSP for a few days to check it out. My wife said if I like it, she'll buy me one for Xmas since she never knows what to get me. Of course, I said "Yes, Please !".

With the Nintendo DS relauncing, which is better to get ? PSP or DS ?
I've never used the DS and only played a couple days on the PSP

I say go with the DS.

Let me break it down for you:

DS = Crap graphics/Good games.
PSP = Good graphics/Crap games.

Decide what is more important to you and choose.

Well after all the years i finally got myself a DS. And i must say i'm really liking alot. I played two DS Games on it so far, castlevania portrait of ruin and sonic rush. Which is both amazing. I also played three gba games.

psp is fun to hack etc
i enjoy the games, especially ones like metal gear solid

i would never ever ever get a DS...i played on the thing once and what can i say, its just crap. didnt enjoy the games and the graphics were pure crap

and it felt too much like holding a brick to me...and the whole touch screen thing...lame imo

these are just my views anyways

The general consensus out there is that if you would like to play decent games (intended for the system) then go for a DS, while if you are willing to look into hacking your PSP, which I might add is very easy these days, you can enjoy numerous homebrew applications such as emulators for older consoles (which I'll also add are also generally better than the library of available PSP games)

for xmas? dude, its still feb!

It depends what you're after. Do you want an equivalent to the PS2 that you can hold in your hand or something with a range of unique and fun games? The graphics on the DS are decent, but the graphics on the PSP are clearly superior. The DS is compact, the battery lasts longer and the touch screen makes for some really interesting gameplay.

ds u can play games and thats about it. games might be inovative, but i personally enjoy a well rounded game.
the ds felt like it was made 10 years ago, whereas the psp still has that wow factor.

also, with the psp, there is so much more you can do with it.
movies/music/internet/software/camera/games.

you can pick up a 2nd psp easily for R1400 and thats a bargain considering what you are getting.

As the man said. My personal pref is good graphics....dont agree with crap games though. There some really good psp games tomb raider, gow (coming soon) splinter cell just to name a few. I have a psp....the graphics for a handhelp console is amazing...but hey its your choice at the end of the day.

Thanks guys.
So far I'm leaning to PSP, but since it's still a looooong time to Xmas I may change my mind.

PSP games also seems more easily available (at the moment), including secondhand.

I don't mean to lean on the piracy side but the DS is even easier to hack.... Just get a flash card and your done. No messing with system files or running the risk of bricking your system. And since the ds' games are smaller 150mb max i think, you can fit more on a 1gb card, Where with the psp you can only fit one and what a killer on your cap. Also a flash card isn't just in favour in piracy, it allows you to view videos, mp3s, pdfs etc. Sorry for talking bout piracy guys

definitely psp. I've had one for 2 years (i think) and have only started playing it now.
Custom firmware + 2gb card = leetness.

im currently playing final fantasy VII on my psp.
You can rip any ps1 game and play it on your psp! amazing!

have a look for final fantasy VII crisis core and check the graphics, absolutely amazing for handheld.

/love psp

The risk of bricking a PSP is about Zero nowadays...Even if you brick it, theres Pandoras Battery which takes about 10 mins to do which unbricks it :D

...this is the same argument with cellphones that are the size of bricks with battery lives of 5 hours because they can do all that. In the end, you have to ask yourself, "Are you buying a PSP/DS to play games or watch movies, browse web, play songs " . I personally would not want to lug that big thing around for music, and if i REALLY REALLY want to see a movie on a teeny tiny screen AND requiring me to convert the movie onto a "never enough space" flash-drive ...i wouldn't bother getting a PSP/DS for that purpose.

Yes it's nice to have, but at the end of the day, i actually don't bother . It's a novelty, you do it a few times and then realise there's better devices for that.

The DS got some great addictive games, it's like those silly flash games people play in their browsers at work..... The PSP got hardcore type of games for more serious gamers. Basically it's the same essential diff as between the WII and PS3 . Assume they cost the same.

It depends on what kind of gamer you are. Some people just want to "fill the empty time to play games" = DS . Other want to make time [moving stuff around] to play games = PSP .

Xmas is a whole 10 months to go, maybe something new comes out?

Tough call really. The DS is the worlds honey at the moment it's outselling everything by more than 2:1. The interface is unique but the graphics are not good by a long shot.

I'll say the same thing I say about the consoles, don't look at the hardware, look at the catalogue of software and games you'd like to run and go according to that. PSP is like a mini PS2, the DS games are more left field.

I've always leaned towards the DS, but I'm afraif at R1800 I can't justify that price.

Remember that at the moment the only console that is out selling the wii is the DS. It only recently got re-launched in sa. The games catalogue will vastly improve. By xmas there will be the types of games you like in sa.

Another thing to note, the DS got a touchscreen as opposed to the PSP which uses the conventional buttons thing.

The touchscreen alone results in totally new types of games -and- new ways to play well known types of games. I.e take Metroid Prime (which is a first person shooter) , combine that with being able to target on the touch screen vs. trying to a play FPS using the directional keys....trust me touchscreen ftw.

Simple example : Look at a DS game like Elite Beat Agents . Brilliant game, no way they can do that on the PSP . The game hardly got graphics of note, it's all about the music, tapping on the right spot at the right time .
