DSL - Another 'What to get'

You can always go to an ISP with a Complete Package like the WA one. Then its Telkom normal phone line rental = R152 plus WA complete package @ R200 which includes the adsl rental + 1g + router. I don't think there were any initial charges....and I think the first 6 months on WA are less than R200...forgot how much.

Hmm...I'll do that - only ordered the line at the moment, they advised the girlfriend to get the line before ordering ADSL.

Just remember its a 24m contract. So if Seacom hits then you'll only benefit via extra top-ups etc.

I do the month-to-month thing because if you sign the contract and you want to terminate the ADSL after a certain time, you have to pay out the remaining monthly rental fees. If you cancel the month-to-month you don't pay any extra costs. Ordering the line through another ISP may also take longer than if you go directly with Telkom.

Does the new law with regards to cellphone contracts also apply to ADSL?

Don't know. The only advantage with a 24 month contract is getting a "free" router. Otherwise, take the month-to-month and buy the router for R800.

I already have a wireless router, just need an ADSL modem or router.

Don't forget that the telkom 1gig gives you 10gigs local for free. So maybe use that 1gig then when it's up buy a prepaid gig from axxess or something for international and use the telkom account for local use.

Seems like you've installed the line already... :o

When I went into the store, I was advised to get a Closer2 Package (No installation fee) at R145 p/month.
Then do a self-install on the ADSL.
As I have router and an existing account with Cybersmart, I'm just waiting on the beast to call me when I can do my self-install.
The darn buggers have been screwing me around though to get my self-install done.
But the route that I've taken seems to be the easiest and contract free way in which to do it.

In hindsight, I realise that my previous post does not really pertain to your specific situation too much xrapidx - wrt to a simple DSL solution.

As you have free ISGS, would it not be simpler to organise the DSL through Vodacom and their portal website - I've just been having a look at the site and am looking at the pricing, etc. I'm not to clued up on the scenario.

As for just a normal phone line, the Closer 2, might still be preferable - unless you start looking at higher end Closer packages.

But it would come down to your bandwidth requirements.
If I missed these requirements, I'll be back-tracking through the thread now.
If they're not listed here: Would you mind listing them?
Just to get an idea of what the tarrifs would be via the ISGS route or plain ADSL.

Comparisons on the DSL side of things.

I hope I didn't get this wrong :p

Closer 2 and WebAfrica DSL Complete Shaped:

Closer 2: R145 (free installation and includes the analogue line rental)
WA DSL Complete Shaped 2GIG: R279 (includes the R152 DSL rental)

TOTAL: R424

Closer 2 and Cybersmart One Price ADSL 3GIG:
Closer 2: R145 (free installation and includes the analogue line rental)
Cybersmart 3GIG 1 Price: R259 (includes the R152 DSL rental)

TOTAL: R404

Just a normal 3gig Account (R125) from Cybersmart with the Closer 2 pushes the total up by R20 to R422

It must be noted that Cybersmart have a few setup fees with their 1 Price offering, whereas WA does not - only the R100 for the WA Router.

Looking at Vodacoms's ISGS Portal, the pricing is

For the Island Club (don't know if you're in there) its wack!

1GIG: R222.30
2GIG: R336.30

You can check the rest out here.

A possible upside to the ISGS scenario is that there is no cost involved "directly" to Telscum, but they seem to be making up for that on the data tarrifs. More on that here.

EDIT: Well if you're free of the ISGS, then no need to consider the 3rd option :)

EDIT v1.12: Reflecting back on the Cybersmart option:

If one chose to go with the All in One option with Cybersmart, without the Closer 2, you're looking at paying for the installation of the analogue line R437.50 or around there and then R124.20 or thereabouts

So:
Cybersmart: R259
Analogue line: R124.20
TOTAL: R383.20
R20.80 saving, I'd still go with a Closer 2 and Cybersmart bundled - some savings on Callmore time -though I never make use of the darn thing!
But TIA...

Thanks for the above, somehow slipped through my subscription threads.

Quick question, whats the best modem/adsl router to get?

you're gonna get a dozen different models asking that ...... hehe, mines a SMC but I've heard good things about Netgear modems too. Go with a router though.

Linsksys - Billion - Netgear.

One of those - I use Netgear for DSL and Linksys for Wifi but the Billions look good too - GF has one.

for great support and service WEBAFRICA

Yeh... Telkom installed the line on Monday/Tuesday.

How long does it take them to activate ADSL? I'll do the self-install.

I'm currently in Jhb....again.
