hey,

ive been doing some digging on a good and cheap DSL to play games online with, and on one of the posts made on mybroadband was webafrica's unshapped prepaid, which seems to be good. but the thing is, i dont have a dsl line as of yet:( , and i asked one of the sales persones if a 384kbps unshapped connection would be good for gaming and they said if its unshapped then it would be perfect:confused:. now they have a "bronze unshapped package" that includes line rental with line speeds of 384kbps and 1GB cap, but the cap can be "toped-up" which is good. the whole package is like R254 a month. I want to know if the 384kbps line speed would be fast enough to play call of duty 4 online and how long will i be able to play if i use the 1GB cap just for gaming. i heard from a friend if you just use the DSL for playing online then 3GB would be more than enough. I also want to know how many people will be able to use that same connection and also play online at the same time, if thats possible. im not looking to play on overseas servers, but would like to. or do you guys think neotel would be a better choice. or just give me some advice!:D

thanks in advance!!!! :) :) :)

Eh the unshaped service would rock the boat. 384 Would be fine for 1-2 people playing I rate. I use about 3gigs a month just for gaming and browsing so 1gig unshaped dedicated for gaming should last you most of the month. International play on a FPS would be questionable even with Unshaped in my experience. Even latencies of 100+ms would mean a definite disadvantage for you :(

I play COD4 online with a 384 shaped line from cybersmart and it plays fine. may i suggest you look at cybersmart as there 384 '3gig cap and line rental costs R259 a month as for how much bandwidth I am not sure how much it uses but it dose not use much as i have not hit my cap as of yet .

so international play even with a unshapped connection can give me to high latencies, and the line speeds would then not make any diffrence. but strategy games will be ok internationally? Maybe when we have Fibre optic connections that would be a thing of the past... I currently have Vodacom 3G HSDPA connection, but the latencies even on local servers are too high. wish i lived in Hong Kong with there 1Gbps Fibre connections.

mmm, and i readon one of the posts that neotel has extremely high latencies and the ports are shaped and may not even work on P2P networks.

i also read that SAIX is the best for gaming and webafrica has this "multi-realm" option where you can switch between SAIX and Verzion connections by just appending a ".s" or ".v" behind your username.

why is SAIX better and whats the diffrence between these connections?

sorry for all these questions...

thanks, goona check them out now... mmmm, not to bad.... "All our 384Kb and 512Kb "oneprice accounts" are already unshaped, there is no extra fee.

4MB unshaped accounts can be bought at any cap size at R99 per Gig", thats not bad, and thats only R259...

whats your latency for local and international server with that shaped connection?

isnt that a bit high? my vodacom 3G gets between 125 and 200. well vodacom is high, on international server vodacom 3G gets anything between 500 and 1500!

I've played a LAN across a 384 line before... no issues whatsoever (3-5 people)...

if i have a 384kbps unshapped conection with a 4 port router, will 4 people be able to play online using the same conection?

It does depend how bandwidth intensive the game is though...

Yep,but then you start raising the latency per person

One very teeny weeny Sewage line for 1 toilet. Then you have 3 mates move in. Install 3 spare bathrooms with toilets. See where i'm going with this? ;)

I've been using webafrica's unshapped prepaid (384kbps) for 2 years now; playing BF2142, COD4 online (saix servers); and even Rainbow 6 on intl servers with no problem.

Only problem is the 1GB cap does not last me and find myself topping up regularly (when I used to play)

what is SAIX? and how do you know which SAIX servers are... sorry i dont know much about broadband.

so whats the advantages of this saix servers????

they are based in SA, which means much better pings and you can use your local bandwidth which is ten times cheaper, plus the okes that game on those servers are so good they'll wipe the floor with most player in the world :p

so saix servers are local, and i saw theres alot of games beeing played on saix servers and you use "local bandwidth" thats cheap. how do you get local bandwidth?

ok ive spoken to some one to day at cybersmart about there DSL 384kbps conections and they said i should just email them some servers and they would ping them for me so i can see the latencies... I will post the results as soon as they send them back to me... here is the servers list i sent them....
