Hi all,

I've got this funny problem:

I got the line and ADSL 2 weeks ago and it was working fine untill 3 days ago.
I've noticed that every time I phone the Telkom Help line the Internet comes back alive and fast.

Played with it futhrer and noticed that:
The damn router (400G) will only sync (and then I have internet) when I leave the phone (that's on the same line) of the hook.

If I put the receiver down the sync goes to hell and no internet.

Reported it to telkom...they still scratching their heads.

Anyone had anything similiar?

1. Tried another filter?
2. Filter correctly plugged in?
3. What happens if you unplug the phone from the line?

Yep...sorry forgot to mention it.

It doesn't sync when there is no phone on the line.
Directly connecting it to the line doesn't fix it.

Got only one filter connected to the line, from there it splits to ADSL and LINE (where to phone is connected).

The only reason i can write this is because the phone is off the hook now. Which means No one can phone me now.:sick::sick:

Hope they attend to it quickly cause it's (was) busy phone line too...

sounds to me like something is wrong maybe with your line at the exchange, possibly when the phone is off-hook, and so the line voltage drops a bit, or the connection is opened for voice its sorting out the problem thats stopping your line from syncing.

Not sure what hardware at the exchange filters out voice bands from broadband on the line but would sound to me like thats the problem and when you are actually sending voice (by picking up the phone offhook) its solving the problem.

Maybe ask Telkom to move your line to a new port at the exchange?

Makes sense...also one of the support guys on the phone told me it's a port problem and he's fixing it...obviously not done yet:sick:
Will chase them more monday... I can not have the line engaged all time it's radiculous.

Problem exists with Telkom exchange.

You should be able to the above as all a POTS filter dose is seperate the voice and the data so you do not get any background noise while talking on the phone.

Confirm that you have the ADSL connection plugged directly into the wall socket? It is only the phones, faxes etc that use the filter. They plug into filter and then filter plugs into wall socket. The Telkom filter has two sockets but these are both for phones etc. The wall socket generally has two points, filter goes into one and ADSL line directly into the other.

I had a similar problem...

I had a sync problem a while back and the techies check everything and eventually suggested that the complete cable run be replaced....?

While they were screwing around in the exchange to try different pairs of copper they had to disconnect the exchange connection where the DSLAM connection and POTS line split. When they reconnected the line in the echange the modem synced first time and has been working since. I assumed a bad connection in the exchange at the voice/digital split.

By keeping the handset "open", is to keep some voltage on the voice line to keep the possible bad connection somewhere from causing sync losses. I also had plenty of audible noise on the line.

The "open connection" creates a voltage on the line that ovecomes the bad connection somewhere in the line.

What I suggest is that the problem *might* be at the exchange or somewhere where there is a connection that could be poor or where the contects could be oxidizing. Could be a street box connector.

The Telkom techy must test the line from your premises back to the exchange. These type of problems could be very difficult to trace.

Hope this make sense...
