DSL speeds!

I'd like to add to this post as well for reference:

I'm in the Krugersdorp Area, West Rand, JHB. I always use to get 33-35kB/s connection speeds on my 192ADSL line but it's now at a constant 20kB/s. So don't feel alone...it seems to be a global thing happening with telkom and 192ADSL users.

Yep...I also used to get around 35 kBytes/sec, and now get as low as 16,4! However, this has only happened since there were some Telkom boxes sabotaged in the area.

I complained to them yesterday and, would you believe it, got a call this evening to see if there was still a problem and that they would send a technician! Don't worry, I'm certainly not holding my breath for any technician or any change to the situation - we are screwed!

unfortunately HSDPA is still not fit for gaming as your ping is about 500ms to any of the SGS servers :(

Geez, Then I have been very lucky! With my 192, been getting in the 40k/sec and on limewire sometimes in the low 50s! Haven't tried to download any big files since beginning of the month.

(I must add, don't know if it will make a difference but, I live like right next to the exchange, I can see it from my house!)

Like we all know telkom there is always something up! By end of next month we will all get free upgrades to the speeds we were getting before the alleged upgrade!

Can confirm another 3 accounts - All drop in d/l speed

All 192k all dropped from 32/34k/s d/l speed to just under 20k/s since the beginning of the month. Annoying thing is I can't complain (one of the above 3 accounts mentioned is mine) beacuse technically should only be getting max 24k/s anyway ... *sigh*

These three accounts are in three seprate locations spread across Cape Town using different ISPs. All the 384kbps accounts that I know have not had the same issue (all running at 50+ k/s).

Anybody have any ideas WHY Telksum would do this?

Well I am on a 512kbit line and I am lucky if i get 20k downstream.. Upstream seems to be going like a breeze though...

Can't take it anymore, the beast wins :( Gonna upgrade to 384. 10kB/s after hours is ridiculous

At least its only like R90 bucks more, is it not?

Still a pretty cheap marketing ploy by telkom, but what were we all expecting!? :p
Yeah, but it's something that has to be done. Can't afford to be downloading at dial-up speeds at such a critical point in Prison Break :D

Ok I have confirmed it! my 192k is down from a lovely 30-40 to no more than 20!!! And this is after hours!! Man just when we think things can't get worse in this our volitile state of telecoms!!

This is so like telkom! Let people enjoy something then rip it away faster than it took to get it just when you get used to it!!

Remember what happened with cheap high cap accounts!!

And the sad thing is we can do tidily squat about it!

So sad what they'd do for money, if in fact it is only a way to make money. I wonder if it's really permanent and if they only noticed it now.

I Think they should still give everyone a little bit faster lines so that theoretical speeds can be reached as an average speed. But Telkom would never do that now would they?

I do hope it is not permanent! May be wishful thinking but, it could just be a problem with one of the links or something, we all know that most of the telkom employees were, well on holiday/strike (lol). So we will just have to see what happens!

Why don't you guys do the speed test, take a screenshot, print it, phone Telkom, and tell them that by their own standards, the 192k line is not performing in accordance to that which they are claiming it can.
Well we all know the answer to that one: dsl is a best effort - suck on that consumer!

lol, your answer is a lot more conservative to the one that I would expect...in my world it would be something like : "You're lucky your line is working at all, biatch!"

Well, I've also always had higher than package speeds, always averaged between 48Kb and 52Kb, now it sits beween 35Kb and 38Kb. This really sux.

Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:
Download time: 13.016 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 313.5 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 38.4 (kiloBytes/second)

Download time: 4.249 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 960.2 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 117.7 (kiloBytes/second)
