DSL speeds!

Ok, I finally have my 1024 line after a whole month of bugging TelCon which runs at about 110Kb/sec off-peak, so not too bad, but...

During peak time I only get about 20-30Kb/sec...

Is this normal for TelCon ADSL?

Thanks

Doesnt seem right, at work during peak time i clock 50-80kb/s, it is probably your isp. We using SAIX at work. We run multiple remote desktop sessions and about 7 users doing wat they do best on the internet and all is good. My 384 line is quicker than ur 1024 line during peak, today i pulled down 700mb in just over 6 hours, was downloading at about 40kb/s constant. Get a new ISP. :)

Use Telkom or SAOL. I assure you ull get much better speeds with a Telkom account during the day. Hope you can figure out the best combination for ur line so u can suck it dry. lol :)

Do ISPs really alter the download rates during the work day? If so, thats rather poor business.

Im not sure if its intentional, i believe it is just network congestion. Telkom does have a far superior DSL network to the other ISP's thats y they dont really get congestion. Im not sure if im 100% correct but i think im pretty right. Smaller ISP's are gr8 for nyt time downloading, other than that they kinda suck.

ISP's that run through SAIX get the same performance as telkom accounts, those that run through IS get the same performance any other IS accounts. Generally IS accounts are more congested during business hours. Regardless of which ISP you are with, if they run through SAIX you should get the same performance as any other account running through telkom, including a telkom account. As for speed throttling that's been done by telkom themselves. If you're getting poor speeds during the day then either you're on an IS account, or if you're on SAIX you should log a fault with your ISP so they can take it up with SAIX.

Agreed. I dont believe Telkom are that bad, sure there prices are not so lekker but they have the best network and the best speeds and thats what i want. All IS users should dig deeper into their pockets and invest in a SAIX account, maybe thats a bad idea cos then there will be no posts on the forums cos every1 will be happy as a pig in s.h.i.t. :)

Both SAIX i believe... Webafrica is selling IS accounts now aswell i see....

I like my IS account, up to 30 gigs local access after international cap is something you dont get with SAIX. And you get access to the IS newsgroups which works at full speed, where you can basically download anything you want. I only use my SAIX account for the odd international access when I'm capped internationally on IS. Last month I managed to get in 40 gigs on a 5 gig IS account, before that I was doing about 60-70 gigs a month. You don't get to do that with an SAIX account unless you go through telkom directly, which I won't because it's kinda like selling your soul to the devil, and indirectly running other ISP's out of business.

LOL, i did have a IS Local Account at 1 stage, but then the reseller of that package had to stop the package so i decided to head back to SAIX, i usually do about 12gb a week so SAIX for me isnt too bad. ( I have a few SAIX accounts)

Just a thought, if Web Africa and Mweb are reducing service during working hours then a lot more people would be complaining about it, right? Couldn't find anything of relevence on the forums... could TeCon be throttling the 1024 service during the day?

well the same thing happend to me form 33kb download to a max of 20kb but the strange thing is that before thsi happend id upload at like 20kb and after the decreas of speed i still manage to upload at 20kb a lot of the time

I highly doubt Web Africa "reduce service" during the day.

Mmm - just got my 192k line, and it also maxes out at 20KB/sec. Did a speedtest to ADSLguide in the UK and got the following:

Downstream 131.7 Kbps ( = 0.1 Mbps )
Upstream 151.5 Kbps ( = 0.1 Mbps )

It appears as if I should rather be hosting on this link than downloading <grin>

My 384k is also running at an INSANE speed of only 40kb/s. I'm not paying for a 320k line! Where does the 64k go? Thats a ISDN line!!! And the best part is, my line was running FULL speed! ALL 48kb/s! What happened????

Telkom's fcuking 'best effort' is what happened. You can try complaining about it. Not sure it will get u anywhere. I know that ona 192k line you have to have speeds consistently less than 15k for them to even log a fault!

I am experiencing the same problem. I subscribe to the 192 Kbps service and until a month or so ago I was getting a consistent download speed of around 31 KB/s. Suddenly it dropped to between 19 and 20 KB/s. I thought Telkom was throttling it back at the local DSLAM because of an ATM backbone problem, but now I see it is a national thing. I'm inclined to believe in the theory that Telkom are either "encouraging" us to upgrade to 384 Kbps, or are preparing us for some kind of re-pricing announcement.

Happend to me and a friend of mine, we're both on 192k. Both were getting 33kB/s a while ago then it suddenly dropped to 20kB/s a few weeks ago...

Its a crappy situation - you cant complain because you're now getting around about the speed you should be getting, but that speed is a massive 40% slower than what you were getting :(

I like someone's thoery about telkom proclaiming a free speed upgrade then upgrading ppl to the speed they were before these "speed trimmings" - evil but brilliantly telkom.

As far as i know isp's can only authenticate and disconnect you from telkom's adsl network, they dont have the abillity to throttle your speed. So a Web Africa (non-IS) account will perform identically to a TelkomInternet or any other SAIX based account.
