DSL speeds!

Just had a call from the Telkom Techie - going around to my house this morning to see what is going on there.

/me awaits some lame excuses as to why it is slow...

what gets my head in is this...

Your line speed is approximately 336.5 Kbps or 41.2 kBytes/sec
( Where kb = kilobits and kB = kiloBytes )

Results:
Below is the data used to calculate your download speed:

Download time: 12.125 seconds
Size of file: 500 KiloBytes
Estimated line speed: 336.5 (kilobits/second)
Estimated line speed: 41.2 (kiloBytes/second)

i am on DSL384...did the speed test with nuthing else running....yet 3-4 weeks ago i was downloading at speeds between 50-53k....

now sumone please explain to me the logic of "best effort" from telkom....i know there are no 192/384 DSLAM's, only 512...yet how do they "restrict" u to 192/384? SURELY...true 192/384 connections can be configured accordingly....telkom doesnt know WHAT they doing....

shadowbane, you pay for a line with a capacity of around 36.5 Kbps or 41.2 kBytes/sec.

everyone was getting more than what they paid for, it was only a matter of time until Telkom sorted out the problem!

please try to understand that, it is not about 'Telkom's logic', etc.

how do you get 1mbit DSL if you only get "512k DSLAMs"? :D

meh! :p :p

about the 512 DSLAM's well erf...ok my bad..u get higher..not lower lol

dont get me wrong, i DO understand that i am kinda paying for 41kb line....i am german...(sieg heil) :p and my german blood coursing thru me figures that i am being cheated....

my understanding is this...IF there was a prob on my line r the exchange is to far away...and there is no way i can get my full line speed due to noise, etc etc i wud accept it, yet i have had the experience of getting near 512 speeds, which wud suggest that it is possible to get my full 384 capacity, eg. 48k speeds....

is it just me or have we become so de-sensitized to accepting inferior service...eg. in a restaurant u order a 300g rump...when u get it its 250g, when u complain the cook says oh no i cut it to size and it was my "best effort"...deal with it... (ok maybe a bad analogy) but it gets the point accross.

in my eyes it doesnt make sense.....and i am ok with 41k....i do a lot with it...and sure 50k was damn nice...but it doesnt make me wanna upgrade to 512 YET...unless prices come down...coz to be honest...DSL384 is a lot of "bang for ur buck"...

shadowbane, you are paying for a 384k or 336.5 Kbps or 41.2 kBytes/sec service.

if you pay some more.. you can get a 512k service.. :D

LOL. You have not been here for a while postman, You also been out striking with ur fellow workers?!

Viva amatoitoi viva! :)

nope.. you only make it big at the top, son!

:) PostmanPot I took the liberty to correct your post:

shadowbane, you are getting ripped off for a 384k or 336.5 Kbps or 41.2 kBytes/sec service.

if you want to get ripped off some more.. you can get a 512k service..

I know telkom are telkom ...
But why do they have to be so painful ( because they telkom ? ), my 192 is running 160k ( 20 ) so wheres my 32k (4K ) ? Heck thats pretty much a 56k connection.

Forget the 2nd SNO, someone just blow up the management offices of Telkom, it would be easier and probably solve all the problems ...

I want my fusking ISDN back, this adsl latency is insane!

same thing with my 192, nothing but lag, spikes and disconnects
and how can u say we r all being ripped when other ppl with 384 in my area are not having this problem?

My line was perfect awhile ago, then telkom woke up and realised we should suffer for experiencing the net at such a hyper speed:O

i would forgive telkom and leave em to their orgy if they would just gief my international back:<

my speed where sweeeeeet with my 192 line iz gettin 33kb downloads all the time, from like a day ago i cant even get 20kb wtf is up with that if its going to stay like this all i can say is *&^) adsl is BS and id rather have isdn i just want my 30kb back

Well, after many calls from Telkom ADSL to see if my problem with reduced speeds on my 192 line, a visit from a technician and a call today from another technician, I have been told the following...This tech called a guy in Cape Town to ask about the sudden change around the country. Apparently they run a script once or twice a month to reduce the speeds of those getting more than they pay for...I said that is all good and well, but why then am I now getting less than what I am paying for when I know it is possible to get more (I currently get between 16 and 18.8 kbps). The CT guy apparently says that anywhere between 15 and 18,75kbps is acceptable! This is different to what the ADSL call centre says (18 to 22kbps). Then tells me about overheads etc...above my expertise on this. Just want to know why I don't get what I KNOW they can give me!

Anyhow - the tech in Cape Town will apparently be calling me to explain...I think he should put his explanation on this thread!

Just get 384, i had a 192 line and was getting gr8 speeds, like 30-35kb/s without a problem, then 1 day i could barely reach 20kb/s. So i decided id stop buying my monthly pc mags and upgrade my line to 384. Its only a R89 price increase and at least i download at 40kb/s all the time :)
