We currently have a Telkom 10mbs DSL line and quite often when watching DSTV plus, the program keeps buffering (obviously due to slow line speeds) despite being way below Telkom's FUP. The reason we have stuck with Telkom is because of the landline and email accounts.
I have contacted Telkom and asked them if I move to 10mbs FTTH, will I get a more constant line speed if I am below their FUP. They could not give me a definitive answer, so I though about asking here on the forum.
Anybody else had a similar issue and did your line speed improve by moving to telkom Fibre?
Thanks

You can't say that it's obviously due to slow line speeds without having root caused it first..
You are right it could be a problem with DSTV, but when I do the speed check on my PC the normal speed of 9mbs has dropped to 3mbs, then I would presume that the line speed is slow. Both my pc and DSTV are connected by ethernet.

You can install fibre without cancelling the DSL line.
That way you should have a seamless transition.
Only cancel the DSL when you are sure that the fibre is working.
Yes I did think of that except it is going to hurt my pensioners pocket. Remember there are access and installation fees as well as a new fibre router. I only do month to month no contracts.

If it exchange congestion speeds should be same but monthly cost should be less as you don't need to pay line rental

I went from Telkom Uncapped ADSL 10MB to Octotel 10MB & Afrihost Premium uncapped.
Netflix type of streaming is the same on both.
Ping is obviously better on the Fibre but the line slows down a lot in the evenings.

This ^^^ Don't make the mistake I made. The FTTH is crap, and now I have had to pull mission impossible to get Telkom to install a new landline.

So OP is in Durban North if his profile info is correct. Do you have Openserve fibre? If yet the why not go with 10Mbps fibre from Cool Ideas? It's R499 all inclusive including installation and you CAN;T tell me that ADSL will be better than 10Mbps Openserve because it won't. Octotel has issues but Openserve and the others is pretty decent and the 10Mbps Openserve Cool Ideas R499 deal is well unbeatable even for ADSL.

Its probably due to increased levels of traffic routed to Netflix servers during peak hours...

Consider -

Technically the more people in your area switch to fibre, the better your DSL product should work, as there are less bottlenecks on the DSL side...due to the lower demand on DSL.

That’s what is happening to me.. I love my ADSL IT ROCKS

Was definitely worth it for me. I had a 10Mbps ADSL line that was rock solid for me besides the crappy upload speeds. Been on a 100/100 fibre line with CISP on Frogfoot since last year July and it has also been rock solid, no downtime and consistently good performance. Upload speeds rock!

Depends on your area and provider though because some people aren't having as much joy...

Looks like I am going to switch to fibre. I have not been able to receive emails to my Telkom email address for over 4 weeks, and Telkom is doing nothing or is not capable of fixing the problem. I have contacted them numerous times and not once has anybody from Telkom bothered to pick up a phone and call their loyal customer. Tired of being disrespected, so am going to VOX who are running a special at the moment.

That's Telkom's email. Its always been kuk hence why since the age of time I've used GMail.

Last time I spoke to Telkom, they told me that if I have a landline, fibre installation is free. Maybe you can also check on that as well.

You should separate the services correctly. I assume you currently have a fixed line telephone line (active?) with ADSL connection for data, both from Telkom? The infrastructure is provided by Openserve
On top of that, you then have an ISP service provided by Telkom and an e-mail address from Telkom?

Changing to fibre will not necessarily fix anything about your e-mail service assuming you want to fix that and retain your existing e-mail address?

Is your existing Internet access working? Are you able to access G-mail? and surf the Internet and do all the other things normally?
