DSLRs not allowed - smartphones fine.

Why do security guards always come running when they see someone taking pictures with a DSLR but they'll let hundreds of people snap pictures with smartphones?

Technically smartphone photography also not permitted in these places

Try snap a pic of a singer at a concert with your smartphone. You'll get a grainy wide shot worth little value. A DSLR with a zoom lens can actually get a really decent picture, and be sold on - something forbidden unless you have a media pass.

Technically you are not allowed to snap pics with your phone either, but that's impossible to police.

Even with a media pass you're typically limited to what you can do with the photos you take. You can use them for editorial use, but that's about it.

So you are not allowed to take pics anywhere in public, especially not outside, say at the beach, or in the street?

You are allowed.

They are talking about at events, shows, and stadiums - basically private events and/or areas.

Regarding private places, you have to refer to the Ts & Cs of that event. The way I look at it is, if I have to pay or get a ticket to enter an area, then you have to be careful.

Surprisingly, that is allowed! Everybody waives their right to privacy by appearing in view of the public. What you do with that photo afterwards is a different story, also explained in the link I posted.

You'll still be a perv, but a legal one! :D

Legal, yes, since it's a public space. But don't be a perv without her consent :)
 
I was shooting at the Gautrain station with my Canon G7x point & shoot and the security said I'm not allowed to take pictures with my camera - only a cell phone... :cautious:
