DStv is planning to launch Box Office and it is currently on field trials. Box Office will be a new feature offered as part of DStv on Demand and will give you the ability to rent movies from a small selection and view them in the comfort of your own home. These are movies which have not yet been shown on DStv. :)

So does this mean that instead of releasing say 40 new movies to-air in October, they will instead release 30 new movies to-air and charge us extra for the 10 we used to get anyway? Which we can then pay extra for. Then in January those 10 we have now paid extra for will be broadcast as part of the 30 "new movies" for December?

That's what I'm thinking

(note, I said this instead of +1, as the anti-+1ers have been flapping their arms all day. Reverting to +1 shortly :P )

If it is the same as in other countries, box office will be a service where you watch a movie which have just (or about to) ended it's run in the cinema/dvd rentals or have start selling the dvds. Basically you end up seeing the movie many months before the studios allow television broadcaster like M-net to show the movie. With the benefits of sitting at home, knowing multichoice they'll probably try charge as much as possible.

It will be intersting to see how this works here, Sky decoders in the UK are connected to a phone line, so you can just order the movie off from your decoder (I think you can also do it telephonically).

@ Four11, are you assigned to test this new medium? If your can't not to say, wink once for yes, twice for no;)

-Sidenote: For future note there is a DStv section here. Maybe a mod can be kind and move this

Edit: Thanks to the powers that be in MyBB that moved this thread:p

and about 4 weeks after it hits the trackers. :D

What are the current time windows between 1) Cinema / Circuit release 2) DVD Sales release 3) DVD Rental release 4) TV Broadcast release for movies in SA?

Generally its about 4-6 months from the end of the cinema run, to its DVD rental/sale.

The normallity which I've seen is that it will be a around year until a movie premiers on tv from it's cinema release. Can't say for the others.

Ty both, then it will be interesting to see the time difference between cinema and this box office offering. Guessing it will compete directly with DVD rentals stores, time will tell.

If they follow the American model, the movies should be available between the cinema release and the DVD Rental.

Have a look here for the films on Time Warner cable this month ...

DStv did have Pay Per View before, but I think it was R30 per movie, in 4x3, and shown after the DVD window, so not worth it at all.

So it looks like they are using +-5/6 months in the US judging by the Time Warner new movie listings compared to the imdb release dates. Only compared fury vengeance as a random example.

No. It is around 3 months. DVD Window generally starts at 6 months.
Killers, with Ashton Kutcher for example came out on 4 June in the USA cinemas and is a new release on Demand this month.

3 months is impressive, will see what MC offers.

Well I'm not bumping up to premium again just for that service ... even if by chance a movie comes out earlier than on DVD .... sorry but R530 odd bucks is not enough to justify having Premium again. But thats just me ...

It is surely going to be very limited in selection.
