dstv compact

Like I said i don't watch movies on DSTV.... the service we have is not that bad for a third world country with only about a million subscribers. The worst I've seen was actually in Australia where the the programs almost never start at the scheduled time. In states probably half the channels they have show total and utter cr*p and the good ones show even more repeats than we have here.
 
How much more do you really get with the Premium option, other than the sport?

Something seperate, in Spain the Cable Companies(as in channel providers) also provide broadband internet. I remember something a few years back (iSat I think) where you could get net access through your dish (downstream) and telkom line (upstream). Is this still running or has it died out?
 
Remember isat being pretty **** but never used it myself. Multichoice also offered a similar service called ?Siyanda? or something like that, which was better but not cheap. Don't think its really a good option anymore with ADSL etc.

DSTV have just announced that their new PVRs will start the recording early and end them late so as to capture the whole programme. If that's not an admission of tardiness, I don't know what is :rolleyes:
 
decoder features

does the 'compact' decoder offer similar features to the DSTV one? specifically something like dual-view?
 
Rather have FULL DSTV for 6 months than NO PROPER DSTV for 12 month.

And all the animal lovers, which will say it has National Geograpics. I also watch all 60 channels. But compact isn't upto standard.

'compact' and 'premium' refers to the bouquet that you purchase, not the hardware. as far as i can see, you can use a single, dual, or pvr decoder with either package (could be wrong on this, but have seen nothing to the contrary on their website) - you're only limited in the amount of channels that you are able to view

anyway, what you get (and what you're happy with) all boils down to personal preference and taste, does it not? i'm not saying it's perfect, but i'm quite happy with dstv compact. my advice to people who are interested, would be to take a good look at the channels on offer, and what kind of programming they have, and then decide whether you think it's worth your while (and money)

btw, did you know that, if you have only mnet (via the analogue decoder), you will pay more for that 1 channel (R220 i think) than for the 23 on offer with dstv compact (R199)?! :eek:
 
I don't have DSTV nor the compact version, just plain old boring M-Net...

I take it DSTV Compact's M-Net Series channel is not the same as DSTV's Series channel, correct?

Wouldn't mind ActionX, although it's allegedly not great, but compared to M-Net & SABC & ETv, almost anything has to be better - I don't think I can put up with M-Net etc anymore, and DSTV Compact is slightly less expensive than what I've been paying for M-Net all these years...

:cool: better than I expected then, now about that bog standard DSTV decoder, does it have a SCART thingamy port? - I have this UK [Thomson] Tivo box that I need to try and ressurect [before Tivo-ZA asks, I just haven't made time for it :o], and if I can get my Tivo box working again with the ZA Tivo iso image and an ordinary DSTV decoder, then I don't need a PVR decoder @ the wonderfully exorbitant price of R2500...

The newer single view DSTV decoders no longer have a scart output connector. It's not a real problem though as you can get a composite to scart connector which will allow you to connect the DSTV decoder to your UK [Thomson] Tivo :D

Composite to scart connectors cost around R20, you can get them from Zakspeed, Makro, etc. Just make sure to get a scart input connector or a switchable (input/output) connector.

The TiVo has a custom lineup for DSTV compact users so when searching the guide data and/or surfing the channels you don't have to wade through the content/channels you don't have.

If you have Compact you also get SABC and E-tv, so no need for a perfectly tuned terrestrial antenna. And all the DMX audio channels.

I've been considering Compact too. Maybe just upgrade to premium temporarily during major sporting events and then downgrade again afterwards.
